New computer, need help/suggestions. - Page 2

I'd go with the DFI lanparty. Also, I noticed you don't have a gfx card. I would recommend going with a HD 3850, they run about $120 or so.

You have a great system so far, but there is one thing that I would change. For the motherboard I would choose either a Gigabyte DS3L(DS3R if using RAID). The Blood Iron is what I have read a pretty advanced overclocking board with a ton of options. This is the same decision I made when I built my PC. I chose the DS3R because it is super easy to step right in the bios and start overclocking right away. The bios is also very descriptive in the options. It's been overclocking great so far and I haven't had any problems.

I had the graphics card in my first post, I'm getting a 4850. I was looking at the Gigabytes but the reviews made it seem like since starting that EP thing they've gotten cheap and the bios aren't working well. If anyone's tried both what was your preference? Good overclockability would be nice but I'd prefer stability and reliabilty, I don't have a bunch of spare parts to go checking things and I'd rather minimize the risk of getting a defective board or having it not be compatible with something. Also, What would be better, 4gb of the Gskill RAM, or 2gb of some better kind of RAM like Corsair or something?

A power supply will only use as much power as your parts need. So if your parts only need 300w, it'll only draw 300w (a little more due to efficiency issues, but that's the basic idea). I was just saying you can order from Provantage to save a little money on that model.

Or would I not be able to do that even with an E8400 without spending like $2000?
If you want to play S.C. then definitely get the quad core. That game is CPU-hungry like no other and loves multiple cores. Any games that you can't max out will usually be due to graphics power and not cpu power (other than maybe Crysis, which likes both...).

The OCZ Vendetta 2 should fit any of those boards and is $30 after rebate at Amazon. It gives the current top performer, the Thermalright Ultra Extreme (TRUE for short) a run for its money. There's about a 1-2C difference between the two when the TRUE is lapped and modded and the Vendetta is quite a bit cheaper.

The 550w psu was only 7 dollars cheaper thant he 650 there, but still that site will save me a bunch of money and let me get some better stuff, thanks for that. And I've been reading around a bit and saw benchmarks showing the E8400 only did a little better in most games even overclocked versus a 6600 oced as well. Also, does the Q6700 add much performance over the 6600 or should I just stick with that? And I read a review from a guy saying that he was worried the Vendetta would fall off since it was only mounted with clips instead of a backplate and he didn't trust it, should it be safe? I don't want to get something thinking it'll extend the life of my computer just for it to fall over and break the videocard or something.

Also, is this RAM good/better than the Gskill I had before? It's just a lot of the reviews described the Gskill as cheap and thus not as fast as other RAM.

If he has the money why not keep the e8400? it has extra cache which comes in handy for gaming and other things.

Now I think I'm going to go with a quad, figured it'd be more futureproof, especially if I get a Vendetta or some other cooler(any of you have a vendetta? does it feel secure on the board? Some guy said he doesn't trust the pin mounting with how big it is) I'm thinking now of whether I should get the Q6600 which on Amazon is same price as E8400 on Newegg, or the Q9450 for $120 more. Much more than I originally wanted to spend but if it's performance is equal in proportion to the price compared to the 6600 I'd be fine with it.

Also anyone have that RAM I posted before? Or should I get something else?

Are the new Nehalem's going to be that much better than the current Intels? Because I saw someone saying that the Nehalem will completely obsolete the current core 2s. I'm sure that's not entirely true and a E8400 or Q6600 will last me fine fine to play any game really well for a while. But it's got me thinking maybe I'll just get the E8400 after the price cut, get the Vendetta 2, overclock it as much as I could, figure that should do me fine for 2 years or so, then I could get a Nehalem or maybe if AMD gets good again one of those, or maybe if it really should last a good while(3+ years) get a Q9450 and overclock that, would that be worth the extra money over a Q6600 if I were to get a quad?

Also, Was thinking of getting this RAM
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227267
That should overclock fine right? Will the lower speed matter or should I get the 1066?

Ok, I think I've decided I'll just stay with the E8400, but I was wondering if it'd be worth it to get the 4870 over the 4850, or if maybe I should just put the extra money for the time being into a 2 video card lanparty instead of the p35, and later when I get a new monitor(can only max at 1280x1024 on my current one) get a second 4850. Any thoughts?
