Very Confused about TV Tuners

Thread Starter
Ok, I have a 50" 1080p HDTV. How would a TV Tuner work if I wanted to record TV shows I watch on TV to my computer? What about HD shows? Thanks.

Depends on what you have for a service provider.
If you have digital cable, you can try to get a cable-card tuner, but I think you need a special BIOS for those and they are OEM only, last I checked.
If you use an antenna or have basic cable, you can pick up HD locals and SD locals with a QAM/ASTC tuner. (I personally use an HDHomeRunner)
If you have directv, they are planning to release a pc card at some point. As of now, the only way to get HD into the PC is using a Hauppauge HDPVR. This product does not work with Windows Media Center (just in case thats what you were planning to use). This should also work for digital cable as long as you have a converter box.
I only get SD into my PC from my Directv box, so I am using the s-video input on my Hauppauge PVR-150 for now.

Of course you need software too. You can use Windows Media Center, Sage TV, Beyond TV.... There is also Myth TV if you are familiar with Linux.

Getting it to the TV from the PC just requires the proper output/cable. Usually HDMI or DVI. If you have other questions, I can try to help more.

You can't record HD cable channels though normal PC TV tuners. Only very special OEM TV tuners are authorized to do so (i.e. Tivo, HD set top boxes). I believe the only PC-based TV tuner that can do so is the HDHomeRun which requires CableCards. You can record HD through set top boxes but no common tuners have component or HDMI in. This was done on purpose to restrict pirating.

Sorry to jack the thread like this but I was just wondering how the Hauppauge PVR-150 performs. I need a card mainly for recording some vhs home movies onto my computer but I want a tv tuner too. How's the quality with that card and how easy to use is it and all that. Can I get your review of it since you own it BlackandBlue

I can't really complain about the card. It is one of the best performing cards for the amount it costs. I have the s-video from my Directv box going to the input on the pvr-150 (then DVI to TV) and it looks 85% of what the DVI out straight to the TV does. The color and satuartion is spot on, but you can tell that the signal is interlaced and being forced out as a progressive signal. You may be able to clean it up with ffdshow, but I haven't bothered because it isn't that noticeable. Since you are taking a video off of a VHS tape, it may be even less noticeable.

The audio level/quality is as good as it gets with RCA signals. I have heard people complain that its tinny, but I haven't noticed. Maybe there have been new drivers since.

One thing to mention if you are planning to use Media Center with this (or any single tuner card) is that the AUX in (s-video or composite video) is counted as a 'tuner'. So, that means it either the AUX input OR the built in tuner. I was planning to use this card in my HTPC to get locals on cable and use the s-video for the Directv, but its one or the other. If you are using their software, I believe you can select which 'tuner' to use and is not an issue.

I got the white box special on newegg since it had the RCA audio inputs instead of the mini jack. It does not come with a remote or IR blaster.

I personally find the ATI Tv wonder 650 works great. It has an ATSC tuner, NTSC tuner, composite in, as well as a FM tuner. The best thing about it is that it works seamlessly with MCE.

NO!

I have a PVR150... it has luma ghosting! So annoying!
No [customer] reviews I've read mentioned this. Get something else.

As for what BlackandBlue said about interlacing... uh, the card outputs interlaced.

The video quality is quite good. I'd have no complaints if it weren't for the ghosting.
If you were planning to use it to get PS2 on your monitor or something, forget it. There's 2 or so sec delay while it goes through the digitizer and encoder.

It encodes at 8000Kbps MPEG-2 (supposedly switchable for up to 15Mbps MPEG-2, but I haven't been able to do it) video and 384Kbps MPEG-1 layer 2 (MP3 = MPEG-1 layer 3)
Ghosting example (guy on the right)

It's rather annoying in high action sequences, but I guess if you don't mind it...

What I meant by that is the card puts out interlaced, but the video card output to your TV is progressive. Hence the interlaced forced to progressive conversion.
