You can get more expensive boards if you'd like (like this Asus Rampage Formula X48), but those should work just fine.
Best advice yet!

Go for this ram at only $105:
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)

the GA X48-DQ6 is cheaper than the Rampage..still supports DDR2 [unless you want the x48T, which is the DDR3 version].

..I have both the Rampage and the DQ6. You can OC the DQ6 in your sleep, almost..it is much simpler than the Rampage BIOS, but equally as effective. I have had zero issues getting both of my sig'd Q4's in excess of 3.6ghz and 480mhz FSB. I have only had the X3320 for two days now, but am shooting for 500+mhz FSB stable on the DQ6.

*ps.. Xfire is flawless.

As stated before, Skulltrail is the only Intel system motherboard that supports both Crossfire and SLi.

It is possible, but will only work with older SLi capable cards. You would have to make sure that the motherboard has two PCI-Express 8x slots, so most Intel 965 and 975 based boards will work. You would also have to obtain the hacked 85.96 drivers, which means that you won't be able to run any newer cards in SLi. At the moment you cannot run "hacked SLi" on any cards that came out after the 7900 series, so that relates to the 7950 cards and the entire 8 series that was released after. With this in mind, and the fact that it isn't offically supported by Nvidia, it's not recommended to go for a setup like this.
Answers to SLi related questions

In other words, unless you plan on sticking with outdated 85.96 XP drivers, and never intend to use anything higher than a GeForce 7900, an nVidia chipset is your only real option for SLi.

Gigabyte GA-X48-DQ6 (DDR2) and GA-X48T-DQ6 (DDR3), correct?

How about the GA-X48-DS4? A little cheaper, but still any good?

Nice edit.

Still, $238 for 4GB of DDR2 RAM, no matter how fast, is too much.
