Recommend me some new headphones.

Thread Starter
So the time has come for me to get rid of my HD212Pro's and step up to something nicer.

I mainly listen to rock/metal/hardcore stuff and some dance/trance/techno. I'm not a complete bass-head, I would much rather have an overall nicer sound than overwhelming bass. These headphones will be directly hooked up to my XtremeMusic without an amp (no portable players). I want to keep my budget around $150 - $200, but could possibly go up to $250.

I've been looking at the Grado SR125/225/325i's, but then read some reviews that they tend to hurt after prolonged listening sessions, and don't stay on your head too good (I usually keep my headphones on for a good 4-6 hours). Another were the HD555's.

Any input is appreciated.

HD555s would be a poor choice, they simply don't have enough energy or punchiness for metal.

I'd look into Denon D2000s, they've got a decent amount of nice bass, they're energetic and extremely comfortable.

I totally forgot about the D2000's. Will look into them.
What about the Grados? (Comfort aside...)

I'm not a fan of them, their sound signature just doesn't fit with me. However, if you like it, there's nothing like them.

I have these ones and I love them. I listen to metal/heavy metal all that good stuff and I find them great. They seem to have really good highs, mids, and bass as well. I reccommend them, but I cannot compare them to others because I have no other listening experience. Check these out though, lots of people around here love Audio Technica.

The stock Grados really aren't comfortable (at least back when I tried them a couple years ago), but the cans sound great. You can get any number of replacement pads that are more comfortable. Search around on head-fi's forums for replacement suggestions.

I wouldn't recommend the HD280 Pro...they're not terrible by any means, but they're kinda boring. I like them for some light movie watching and for their isolation. They're indispensable at a loud LAN party.

Some other cans you should look into: ATH A900 (what I use. INCREDIBLY comfortable), DT770 Pro (80 ohm since you're going unamped), and DT 880 Pro. I'm not sure how the new Senn 595s sound unamped. Apparently Sennheiser started making lower resistance versions, so they should be pretty good unamped.
