Not neccesarily. 32 bit xp will only see a total of 4 gb in your system, video card memory included.

in my case, I have a gb of video cards thus going to a 4 gb kit would only use 3 gb of ram.

with 64 bit vista on the other hand, 4 gb is very handy.

3gb is still more RAM than 2gb
Sure, XP runs smoothly with 2gb (Or heck, even 512mb), but having more is still better

I've been saying for quite some time now that 4gb helped out a lot with the stuttering in Crysis... looks like I was right.

More memory is always better.

(So long as your OS can actually read it )

As much as I hate Vista, I've used the 64bit Home Premium version with 4GB of ram, it doesn't "lag" as bad as the 32bit version with 1GB of ram (none of them are my comps, just friends'). I would say it's on par with my comp when it only has 2GB of ram (I have XP). I wanted 4GB for my current comp, but long story short, I ended up with only 3GB. If I'm forced to upgrade to Vista in a few years, it'll definitely be 4GB of ram and 64bit. The extra ram really helps.

Oh dear me Drifter. Of course 4GB will be faster and less choppy than 1GB. It won't matter whether it's 64bit or not. The difference there is huge. Stick to XP. Vista users don't want you around the tech support forums.

Vista uses a F@H like way of using RAM, it uses what's spare, but gives it up when something asks for it.
