Overclocking Suggestions

Thread Starter
Anybody that has read any of my recent posts will know that i have had to RMA my P5N-E SLI because it was us. So when i receive the new one i will have to start everything again. The system in my sig is what i will have. But... i want to overclock the motherboard and i want the system to be a gaming system so - here is what i want to know

What CPU fan should i buy? and where can i buy it - i want my q6600 to hit 3ghz again or above so can you please suggest the best on out there for under 40 quid.

Also - i am going to buy a Point of View 8800 GTS as it is only £152 - but i hear that the newer ATI's are alot less in price and are almost equal to the 9800... is this true or just a rumour? and is there a better card that the 8800 GTS on the market for a similar price.

Also - for gaming, using Windows Xp... is it worth going up to 4gb? i was under the influence that it wont make a difference with Xp, but just to clarify.

Thank You

The ATI cards is great value, considering the price. The new 4850/4870 is both cheap, and very high performance. I'd rather buy a 4850, than an 8800 GTS.

In Norway, the cheapest 4850 I could find, was 244.369 USD / 123.672 GBP, and the cheapest 4870 373.551 USD / 189.134 GBP. I don't know of any good pricecomparison charts for USA, etc. so I use Norwegian prices as an example. (US and GB prices seem to be lower than Norwegian do'h)

About your cooler Q, if you're planning to keep your system for a long time, I would recommend to go for watercooling. You can easily hit 3.6, without being affraid of temperatures. (even if it's a bit more expensive at first, it's cheaper in the long run).

If your system is 64-bit, 4 GB RAM is great ! But if not, I think that 2 GB is enough for XP. 2 GB is recommended for Vista.

With the 4870/4850, which supports DX10.1 I would also recommend Vista. New updates is making it faster each day(my impression).

Hmm, anything I left out?

Best regards

JC

ok i think i can answer two of your questions

1. cant answer dont really no them i got liquid cooling

2.what do u mean 9800gx2 or 9800gtx

3.no not really xp can really only use about 3.2 of your memory that you put in. when u put in 4gb the bios reserves around 800mb even though it is a absoulute waste. just because xp was not desinged for 4gb. it might say 4gb but u can only use 3.2gb vista however supports 128gb hahah who would have that much

1.) for 3.0GHZ an "Arctic Freezer 7 Pro" for higher OC "Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme"

2.) ATI - 4850 is decent price 179$ US, and is faster than 8800GTS. but im a nVidia fanboy so id say SLI the 8800's and it will be faster than 4850/4870

3.) Any 32bit Operating system can only use 3GB of RAM.. So.. if you are sticking with XP 2GB is fine.. If you move to Vista, go with 64bit and 4GB

**they were faster on the draw**

about the 8800gts, two of these is around the same price as one 9800gx2, so go for the 9800gx2 because then when u get another howeever much in your currency then u can have quad sli.

vista is a ram hog thats why you need 4gb. xp64 supports more than xp32 because well thats the way it is (i dont really no but it does)

I think i am going to with the ATI Radeon 4850 card as they are only like 130 quid and apparently on par or better than the 8800 series.

With these CPU coolers that you had mentioned - where could i purchase these? can you supply me with a link?

What are the dimension values used by CPU fans - is it height, width, length in that order.

huh most of them should fit , since these days they have to make the motherboards at least fit your default fan, so they should be around the same size as your default fan if not maybe a little bigger

btw just read a review on that card, sounds pretty good the only con is two of them has the performance of a 9800gx2 but u can have two 9800gx2's in sli which would double the crossfire performance

oh and 1 more thing since your getting a sli board i dont THINK im not sure if u can use a ati card in it and if u can i dont think u can crossfire

actually i have now decided to shell out a little more and buy the 4870 DDR5 - apparently it is the most powerful graphics card on the market.
