um.....

gtx260>9800GTX = 4850

"Most reviews we saw the 4850 ahead of the 9800 GTX in games such as Call of Duty 4, FEAR and in the 3D Mark vantage benchmark under Windows Vista http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_Vista . The 4850 came in behind the 9800 GTX in Crysis, ET: Quake Wars, Stalker, Ghost Recon and Grid."

Think its all swings and roundabouts. 4850 is better in some scenarios, the GTX260 is better in others.

Factor in price and its the 4850

Well are you just talking about raw performance? I don't know why you'd compare those cards since they are far apart from eachother in terms of price. Compare the GTX 260 to the 4870. 4870 tends to come out on top by a bit.
If I wasn't so happy with my 8800 GTS (G92) I'd be considering that 4870. I kind of wish I had the new 9800 GTX+, I'll bet it overclocks quite a bit further at 55nm.

4870 aims GTX260. 4850 aims 9800GTX. nVidia responses with 55nm 9800GTX+. So GTX260 is better.

I love my Nvidia card but there seems to be some opinions that aren't born out by the benchies I've seen. Based off of what I've read and seen it would go like this,
4870>GTX 260>9800GTX+>4850>9800GTX
Then you factor in price.
Unless you are some kind of african prince. In that case you SLI a couple of GTX 280's.

at stock clocks, I can agree with your proposed food chain of gpus.

However, now that a good overclocking program has hit for the 4k series, it's going to look really bad and change things immensely. What I've been able to tell based on my overclocking of just the HD4850, it scales massively with gpu core clock speed. I got nearly 14k in 3dmark06 with a measly 3.16ghz e8500 and like 75fps in Grid @ 1920x1200 w/ 4xMSAA
