New Computer, not all that impressed...

Thread Starter
I recently built a new computer, my first custom build (stats in my sig).
I feel like i'm not getting the most out of my build. Windows boots up relatively slow, gaming performance isn't too great (good, but it's not what expected anyway).
I've updated all my drivers, the BIOS, did the patchs for multi-core with XP, and did some slight cpu over clocking.
Am i missing anything that i should have done for a new build?

check out the couple pics i have up, i think i did pretty well with cable management!
and I just ordered a Big Typhoon. So, no more stock cpu cooler, even though it keeps it in the 50s loaded.

What was your previous rig? What are you comparing the new rig to?

i'm also curious what you are comparing this to for speed. run some superpi and compare your score to others scores on here.

there are some windows tweaks that might get you a little more performance. are you using vista or xp, 32 or 64 bit?

Is your CPU @ stock speeds??

It may be bottlenecking your CPU...

and personally, I wouldn't get a big typhoon...

overclock!
hmm, go start, run, type in msconfig, go to startup and uncheck any unnecessary items eg. Norton (big PITA)
My laptop with only about 7 items starting up takes maybe 5 sec to login and be ready to go. its only a core 2 2ghz with 2gb ram.
Is there an equivalent to the Intel Speedstep for AMD? turn it off if there is.

Previous rig was a HP laptop, dv9000. with 1.6 dual amd 64-bit and 2 gb ram.
Both comps seem to run windows similarly (both with XP sp2, 32-bit)

The cpu right now is overclocked to 3.22 from 3.00. I was waiting for a better cooler to bring this up more. Ram is 4-4-4-15. I don't know much about ram OC but I picked up this config yesterday from a similar build. GPU is overclocked already (part of the SSC edition), I have yet to successfully OC it more.

I can run benchmarking when i get home this evening.

I guess my title may be misleading. It's a great build, and it runs well. I was just expecting a little more i guess.
The main intention was to check to make sure I had done everything necessary to do with a new build.
thanks for the replies
