How do I choose a sound card?

Thread Starter
1. What do I look for when purchasing a sound card?

2 . What is a good sound card for $50 or less?

3. What type of "mods" can you do when it comes to sound cards?

4. I am having problems with onboard audio and microphone gain in teamspeak and ventrilo. Is this just because the onboard sucks? Will a new sound card even help my microphone "volume" or gain increase?

Thanks to all in advance.

Well in order for us to help you decide what a good sound card is for you, we need to establish a couple of things first. Will the sound card be used primarily for music listening, gaming or both? Do you have any other needs in the sound card such as optical input and outputs? You might also need to go a bit higher than $50 to get a card of good quality.

Creative's XFI-based cards have a mod that you can do to them, there isn't much else out there as far as modding goes in the sound card world. Some cards have replaceable opamps but I wouldn't consider that a mod. If and when you decide to purchase a sound card you will be using different audio drivers and software which will should allow you to make better use of your microphone. Hope this helps!

I will be using it for gaming and some music and basic computing. I just need a step up from onboard and I would be happy

The Creative Sound Blaster Audigy was a great card for under $50 its $29.99 here But check at your local Wal-Mart i got the same thing there for $29.95 but didn't have to pay for shipping! Its a great card but nothing compared to my new SoundBlaster X-FI XtreamGamer ($105.99 at BestBuy)!

The XtremeMusic sound card would be a good fit for you. That link will bring you to Dell.com where it is $79.99. If I were you I would make a post in the Wanted section here at OCN for this card. You should be able to get one for around $50.00.
