Need a $1000 Folder/Office machine,

Thread Starter
Hey! I need to build my mother a new computer, and there is a budget of $1000. I already have a GPU- A 7900GT. Yes I know... But I will GPU fold on my own computer (Getting a 8800GTS - G92 work yet?) And I will also use windows Vista.

So I need a computer- P182 case or smaller, with everything but a GPU. (Monitor and KB and such I have)

Budget of $1000- STABLE Office machine, decent amount of storage, and a great folder. Also want it quiet.. The most demanding software she runs is firefox and Office 07.....

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I will also be upgrading my current rig- And folding. Should I get a new HSF for it to OC the Q6600?

If you think I should upgrade my mobo and give my mother mine while getting an SLI Mobo, go ahead. I just want to get her a new computer and the best folding performance possible overall.

(PS: How long until I can run SMP on a quad in linux while running 2 Nvidia or ATI GPU's? Will it ever happen?)

He already has a 7900GT.... It might be better for folding to buy a whole new card and downgrade to a dual core but... why waste a perfectly working 7900GT and make the computer more office friendly (aka multitasking)

EDIT: wait where did that post go? .... whathe.... I SWEAR someone asked why not an 8800GT.

He already stated in the OP he's not going to fold with the GPU on this rig. Thus, I opted for a Quad for folding, and indeed for multitasking (he could set up folding on 2 cores and leave the other cores for mom)

but if its for folding, adding a gigabyte 8800GT for $70 is pretty reasonable.

Remember that Friday was a holiday, and thus doesn't count.

Note that for Newegg, ordering last Sunday is effectively one day later than ordering last Thursday, because of the Holiday
