That being the case, any of the softwares that members previously posted will work. I use VLC. It plays EVERYTHING I have ever thrown at it. Well except a video taken from FRAPS.

Yup, another PDVD8 user. It's got excellent playback now and it will decode on hardware if you've got a recent ati card 2600/3xxx/4xxx. I don't know if it will hardware decode on an Nvidia card though.

I don't think VLC supports bluray yet.

No, not officially. But it should play back, in theory. I have never tried, but have heard of people saying it works, for the most part excluding Dolby+, DTS Master Lossless and Dolby TrueHD.

But, if you want that, then PowerDVD would be a good choice.

This is actually for a future build, I'm just trying to see what I'm gonna need so I don't get frustrated later on with software costs and such.

Sounds like there are a few votes for PowerDVD 8 or higher. Do you NEED the ultra version of this software to get Surround sound and such? I read that in some of the comments on newegg

PowerDVD 8 Ultra or WinDVD 9 Plus Blu-Ray would be the top choices. The drive should come with software for playback, but probably with limited functionality, such as only 2-channel sound with the bundled version of PDVD that came with my Lite-On drive.

I don't mind spending the money if it does what I need it to do. I don't want to spend money and be left with a product that doesn't work right or is crippled in some fashion.

PowerDVD 9 Ultra is my top choice(or 10 if there is one out by the time I do the project).
I use PowerDVD 7 at work so I'm somewhat familiar with it.
