Windows XP Install on Dell (probably simple)

Thread Starter
Hello all,

This is probably a very easy question to answer.

My friend recently gave me his old Dell Dimension 4600 Desktop but asked that I format the hard drive to get rid of his data, which I did. I want to install windows XP on it, and the Dell case has an official Windows home edition serial. I do not have the Dell reinstallation discs but I do have a Windows XP disc. I have tried to install XP with the windows disc and it keeps telling me that I am using an invalid code. Does anyone know a way to get XP on this thing???

With out the Dell disk I don't know if its possible. Is the XP disk you have Pro or home? The Dell most likely has home on it so you would need a home disk to start with and even then it may not work

It is 100% possible. You just have to make sure you're using the Home Edition disc. You should be able to install all the way without putting in a CD key. Once in the OS, when it asks you to put in a key, and it tells you it's wrong, there should be an option to activate over the phone. Just call MS, and tell them your story, and they'll give you the code to get it registered. Done this tons of times.

You will need Windows XP home OEM edition disk... then it should work

Yep, classic problem... Dell computers need the exact version to use the serial key on the case. Also, make sure you are using the right Service Pack, that matters to. (Ex. Windows XP Home w/ SP1 key requires a Windows XP Home w/ SP1 cd)

Usually, but a quick call to MS will get it activated as long as you have some sort of Home Edition disc running the install.

any OEM OS install disk of the corresponding serial on the case will work to reinstall the OS.

If the key is a "windows home edition" key, then a "windows home edition" OEM install CD will work.

XP requires you to input a cd key from the start.
