Not true - my wife has Vista installed on her Dell which is much like your sig rig. Granted, she has 2gb of ram and a slightly better video card (emphasis on slightly), but it works perfectly and does everything that she needs. It runs just as good on her little Dell as it does on my sig rig.

It's not a huge jump from XP, but if you have the desire to use the latest OS or can get a free/cheap copy (they're out there), go for it! An upgrade to 2gb of RAM would cost about $50 so if you can swing that too, I'd recommend it.

All I can say is that I won't be moving back to XP, ever.

I like it. My rig handles it excellent of course, but a 3ghz p4 with 512mb of ram can actually run vista and run it well as long as you keep it clean and don't have a bunch of background stuff going. My gf's mom bought a compaq with a p4 and 512mb and it runs like **** because she doesn't know how to use it and has like 15,000 bs startup programs. Her grandpa bought an hp(I think) with nearly identical specs and it runs perfect on his because he doesn't use it enough to mess it up, all he does is play pogo.com games. Its a good OS though now that most of the bugs are worked out.

Thats not just Vista though, thats any OS, and its because of all the extra background apps and services running, and registry clutter/errors and all that good stuff. You can keep vista running just as fast as the day you bought it if you keep everything cleaned up.

My mate has got an NVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 128MB PCI card and that works with vista and supports the aero theme... i think it scores 3 in the windows experience index

I liked vista...until my sound card kept crashing forcing me to restart every once in a while. Also I find the transfer speeds are alot slower...other than that it's a decent OS.

The 2GB gives it a huge push. Vista loves memory and will use as much of it as is available. The more you have, the more it will use (in a positive way, not in a resource hog kind of way). With his current sig, I would not upgrade to Vista as it will likely not run well and may have driver issues. I would also recommend a larger hard drive as well. I mean, it'll cut it, but 40GB is a little small for Vista.

i originally dual booted xp and vista ultimate 64 when i built my sig rig...but after about a month i reformated to only vista because i never used xp...but with only 512 mb of ram it would run super slow so i would just stick with xp on your current rig
