HDMI carries sound, but DVI doesn't. Does your HDTV have a regular steroe port (3.55mm)? Mine does, and that is how I did it. Just buy a male to male headphone cable and plug it in from the computer to the tv.

I think you have to find an adapter for the audio out on your sound card then route it through the red and white RCA cables if you want the audio to come out of the tv , If you have a sound system you need what retrospekt mentioned.

I don't think the 8800GTS can do this but I know the ATI cards also have a sound processor on board which is used to make the audio pass through the HDMI cable. if you don't have that on your card then you will either use the 3.5mm to 3.5mm as retrospekt pointed out or a 3.5mm to red and white coax cable.

Only the NVIDIA 9-series and ATI HD series onward support audio via HDMI.
Once again...

It looks like you've got your question answered for you but as mentioned above your card doesn't support HDMI audio passthrough. I just set this up for a customer about a week ago on a sweet dual-slot Palit 9600 GT. Basically you're video card(9*** series Nvidia or ATI 2*** series) will have a little two pin adapter for SPDIF(Sony Phillips digital interconnect format, in case anyone was wondering) that will connect via a two wire audio cable to either a port on your mobo if you use on-board sound or a port on your sound card. Then you just enable it in your sound manager and you are off to the races.

As far as the cable you are looking for, radio shack sells a convenient little cable that goes from 1/8" stereo plug to 1/4" stereo jacks. No intermediary connector required, I actually bought those for another customer. Although some HDTV's will have 1/8" audio in jacks, generally for use in conjunction with VGA in.
