Heatsink on the North Bridge a problem?

Thread Starter
Hello

I recently purchased a Gigabyte GA-M57SLI-S4 motherboard, and instead of the traditional fan, it uses only a heatsink.

Usually I do ALOT of gaming(several, several hours), and most of the time, I tend to leave my pc on for over an entire week.

I'm worried that I won't be able to do this anymore without either replacing the heatsink with an after-market cooler, or letting my north (and possibly south, seeing that it seems to be sitting on two things) bridge fry.

I don't really overclock my pcs (yet ) if that helps.

So, under the given circumstances, is having a heatsink a problem?

Thanks.

since they put a heatsink there, it's probably good enough if you're not going to overclock.
As long as you have a bit of air going through that area, i dont see any problems

And if it ever does die, just send it in for warranty since it'll be the manufacturer's fault

if it doesn't come with one than it probably won't be mandatory. just keep an eye on your MB temps and have good air flow and I think you will be fine.

Just remember anything you do to alter your mobo might make it worse,
"if it ain't broke don't fix it"

I agree with final havoc, so long as your not oc'ing you should not have to much heating above the manufacturers stock specifications.

Though as you pointed out...gaming does in itself present some high heat situations due to in direct transfer of heat i.e. both conduction & convection depending upon the flow patterns inside of your case.

If you have high free flowing air currents in your case you will reduce the effect you having your pc on for hours into days at a time. If your flow is restricted by cabling and low cfm you may have lower performance and over time less life from not just your nb, sb, but nearly all the components housed in your pc case.

My M2N32-SLI has only a heatsink on the NB and SB an its been highly overclocked for sometime now. That heasink should be fine if you have any case fans at all!

I have an Asus Commando. NB has a Heatsink, SB has a plate connected by heatpipe. I think you should be fine if you're not OC'ng. I'm oc'd + 1200 ghz from stock, and I didn't need any extra cooling to keep NB SB cool. Stock is fine. Case airflow is key for heatsinks, or any aircooling.

BTW. my rigs only off for a reboot. She does not get a break

If you are still paranoid about it like I was get this heatsink I promise it works great and keeps that chipset cool . I have it on my board on my AMD rig which is the same board as yours. EnzoTech SLF-1

Otherwise don't worry about it that heatsink you have now should be fine as long as you have good airflow.

Why not attach a small fan such as this one to the NB's heatsink ?
Check this out.

That would be a good idea execept that particular heatsink is very long and if you apply to much pressure either way on it you can break the thermalpaste bond between the chipset and the heatsink so installing a fan on it could be tricky. The thermalpaste was a bit brittle and craptacular when I removed mine.

Thanks for the really fast response, guys

Well, for my airflow, I have two 80mm fans in the front of the case (intake) they don't seem to push a whole lot of air, but they aren't blocked. I also have an 80mm on the glass window on the side (also intake), and a 120mm blowing air out of the back. Basically, I have fans in every place that the case allows.

Is this considered bad airflow?

Thanks again
