[ET] Gaming: Windows Vista SP1 vs. XP SP3

Come with us as we install XP SP3 and take it for a test drive, and more importantly compare it to Vista SP1 with a batch of performance tests. Though DirectX 10 is Vista-only, many a gamer has sworn not to upgrade; will XP SP3 cement their decision, or has Vista and its drivers matured enough to change a few minds?

Final Thoughts
If you were expecting a huge drop in performance as your eyes scanned from the XP to the Vista results, well, surprise! As many a tech analyst predicted, Windows Vista's gaming performance conundrum has largely been solved, and it was mainly due to early graphics drivers.

In fact, I'd been planning to run a few other gaming tests, but the results from these were so uninteresting that further work didn't seem merited. Love it or hate it, Vista is performing far better than it used to.

Game performance, it seems, has been exorcised from your concern when choosing a Microsoft operating system. That leaves a few other factors, of course: stability, responsiveness, eye candy, price, DirectX version, and a few other odds and ends.

It took about a year and a half, but the performance gap between Vista and its forerunner has finally evaporated.
yeah, XP is way faster

+1
vista has many problems that xp had fixed, like no boot disk = repair computer on vista install dvd etc, in xp you have to go into recovery console and run commands that is annoying to remember

Promising results, although personal experience says otherwise...

Not just money but features. Nothing vista has compels me to switch.

Give me one amazing game that requires vista and I will consider switching.

You're basing your opinion on a review that did 3 games?

And MONEY would be an excellent reason not to. I think i paid +$200 for my copy. If Microsoft wasn't in a position to strongarm their retailers, then maybe there'd be a sale once in a while or maybe older versions would be offered and ADVERTISED, not in secret.

I can tell you firsthand that the Dx10 hype is just that, hype. Graphics in Bioshock were good but not OMG good.

Other than that, not much.
