This just basically says, they are pretty much tied up. Considering how old xp is now, thats kinda sad. Hopefully they will correct all the things vista isn't doing right and smash vista and xp with the new windows 7.
They are tied up in performance, not functionality.

I have to admit that i've been happy with the upgrade from XP to Vista. Yeah in the beginning there were some driver issues, but those things are bound to happen. After all, look how many different companies with brands and flavors of every product there are out there. Keeping up to date PLUS having to retain backwards compatibility? I couldn't imagine having to make everything come together like that...

The only area that i criticize Microsoft heavily on is retaining all this backwards compatibility and for ever releasing a x86 version of Vista. If it is supposed to be your newest and best OS then release it in its BEST form, the x64 version! All these poor saps who bought retail computers and notebooks who get the x86 version aren't getting the best reason to own Vista at all...

Anywho, it's late so g'nite!

Answer me this then...

What extra value does Microsoft Vista give to me that Windows XP doesn't do for me already?

Is Vista more secure? Does it perform a needed feature that XP doesn't perform that would make my computer experience vastly better than it is now?

Based on the charts presented in the original post, the performance benefits appear to be negligible either way... therefore other than just having a "shiny new product" on your computer, what are the real benefits of this software.

Once those benefits are determined, please factor in the additional cost of procuring a legal copy of this software for each computer that you own (or needs an O/S) that doesn't currently run Vista. Is the cost for this software still justified?

That in fact is the question. Currently, my answer is... "No... based on cost for what you get it is still not worth my investment in this product". I need more compelling reasons to buy Vista especially at its current price point and "option levels".

I absolutely adore Vista. FAR better, in my experience, then XP ever was. I have zero complaints whatsoever. It is the best OS I have used.
I find it odd that some people will buy into any old "rhetoric" and "marketing" to have the "latest/greatest" new thing instead of just looking at what they actually need...

As far as spending $1500 for a PC... well yeah, cumulatively over time I probably have spent more than that, but each time I spend that money it has a clearly defineable benefit that I'm trying to accomplish. I personally do not buy the latest greatest video card everytime a new one comes out. I buy the video card that supports the games I currently play sufficiently and I enjoy my computer for what it is. This logic generally applies to all the technology I own... I buy what I want in relation to what I need. So far, that just works fine for me. (and I'm not complaining about the performance of XP... so why should I bother at this time with Vista?)

People just get too caught up growing their "e-penis" value thinking that having the latest greatest of anything makes their computer/electronics/equipment/etc... so much better than anyone else's... and debating this over the O/S just re-emphasizes that point.

My point is... use whichever O/S works best for you. It's your money do what you want with it, however don't disparage folks who don't see it the same way just because they don't follow the same sense of urgency to replace what they have that obviously works just fine for them.

Pretty much thinking that way is just pure arrogance (not call YOU arrogant, but just the sentiment in general) in my opinion.

I just want to add some balance to this discussion.

I think it's very reasonable that if your computer already has XP that you don't upgrade if you're happy.

However, the idea that when you buy a new computer you should go into Best Buy and spout off about how XP is better than Vista; that's not such a reasonable thing. This is as ridiculous as those people (like my company's IT) who claim that Windows2000 is the best OS Microsoft ever released. These were the people who were outraged by XP's call for more than 128MB of RAM.

"Hey I like that opinion -- I think I'll pretend it's mine!"

You know, some people think that the few improvements Vista offers should have been included for free as updates to XP...

then why is it i can install xp and all my drivers are good to go?
