ISP Questions

Wondering firstly if this is the right thread for a question about my ISP. I suppose you'd have to be running AT&T Yahoo DSL to help, but there is a general question at hand too...

What does 6MBits /sec translate into as far as k/second?

If I was achieving ~210k/sec downstream at 1.5mbits a second, should I be getting more than ~310k/second downstream if I am supposedly running at 6mbits a second now?

You see, I upgraded my ISP service from their 2nd tier to 4th tier of service, supposedly from 1.5 to 6mbits a second but have yet to see more than 300k/second downloads. They advertise that it's up to 4x faster than tier two service for little more per month, but so far this isn't what I'm seing.

They did say though that it could take 3-5 days for it to boost in speed, but I have already seen a slight boost in speed to 300k/second from 200k/second... So I am wondering if there is some kind of complication that I am not aware of yet. Maybe I'm wrong, but I think this should almost be downloading at 8 or 900 k/second.

I will definetly wait the three days to find out, but if it's not up there by thursday I will know something is definetly wrong. Something is leading me to believe too though that I will only achieve these kinds of speeds when using yahoo/att/sbc services. But I am wondering if anyone out there with the same ISP has any experience with the service plans?

note: I am now going to attempt to find help on the yahoo site, as they have a pretty comprehensive help system online. I came here first cuz I trust u guyz.

6 megabits is 750 kilobytes per second

I have 7 megabits and I download about 830-900 depends

And have you been doing speedtests like at

http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest

I use them all the time for speedtest's, but it is not instant speed sometimes, takes a while to take into effect

Usually you can divide the megabits / 8 and find your true download speed

6mbps is 750 kb\\s.

And faster downloads depends on the server you're downloading from. Take a test on www.speedtest.net .

I am definetly seing a speed increase since I signed up last night, but not quite as fast as I'd have expected. I might try to power cycle my DSL modem and see if that helps, but I have a bad feeling about this. Why would my speed increase only a fraction of what it should have?

I have confirmed that my Speed is only at 2.5mbits/second through ATT's speed tester program. Now we wait and see, and if worst comes to worst I'll end up paying less per month!

Try http://www.speakeasy.net/speedtest/ I have tried my ISP speedtest before and my connection was always crap on there so don't use it, I would just try to power cycle and wait it out, Its hard but somethings are not instant

I agree, most things aren't instant. Maybe things will improve later today or tomorrow... I still have like 2-4 days before things might be working!

Well, I think that things are going to get faster around here, as I just ran the test and it's now running me at 4mbits a second... or 500k ... here's to 6mbits by the end of the week!
