I'm getting a pitiful 1647 PPD on my HD4850 at the moment. Is this even worth it?

You can calculate it out of the iter/sec.
Or out of the steps between every % (fahlog.txt) and the total points for the WU.

But best is to download the monitoring app fahMon, that does it for you and shows your Clients PPD...

You should be getting alot higher than that. More like 1600 - 2500, on just two cores.
