RAW Facts 8800GTS 512MB & 8800GS 384MB

Thread Starter
Please check for the RAW facts and figures for the 8800 GTS 512MB vs. 8800 GS 384MB. The reason I’m doing this comparison is because you can buy two Asus 8800 GS 384MB for under £100 GBP from overclockers.co.uk.

When you SLI you don’t get twist the power its normally only 1.8times the power. Plus some games do not support SLI but new drivers and patches are being released everyday

Below are the Figures for the 8800 GTS 512 x1 & 8800GS x2 SLI (all I have done is multiple everything by 1.8 apart from the wattage and steam processors and MB

Model: GeForce 8800 GTS 512 ---GeForce 8800GS x2 SLI

Keep in mind, when in SLI, the maximum memory is not actually "combined". While technically you'd have 768MB of physical (video) memory in an 8800GS 384MB SLI config, you can only utilize (for all intensive purposes) a maximum of 384MB at any any given time.

You can't do that surely.

What I mean is, you can't multiply the memory, as the amount doesnt increase.

E.g. 2 GTS's will have 512MB, available, as its cloned to both cards, not 1GB. Think multiplying some of the other numbers is dodgy as well.

Though obviously in SLi it might work out as a competitive option, I havent seen Sli numbers for them. but for under £100 for a pair, I'd be mighty tempted if I had a decent motherboard

I'm beginning to believe "enthusiast" is a euphemism for "fanboy."

Why not just get a HD 4850 that beats everything mentioned?

yeah this is just a budget solution if 2x 8800gs for £100 can beat 8800 gts which is £150 its a good choice

Flawed analysis. This multiply everything by 1.8 is:
1) A best case scenario since a second card in SLI will in the best situations give you an 80% performance bump over one.
2) The usable frame buffer should not be multiplied.
3) Specs are not great for comparison, Benches rule the comparison roost. Benches ideally on identical systems with only the gpu's switched out.

The dual 8800GS solution will probably trounce the 8800GTS512 at lower resolutions/settings, but as soon as you start running benches where >384MB of vram is required (not terribly uncommon, crysis, stalker, lost planet can all do so with high textures, let alone using AA), the 512 will likely pull ahead. Also, not every game shows 1.8x gains in fps from SLI, that's more like a maximum. And the 1.8 applies to FPS when comparing one card vs the SAME card in SLI, otherwise, it's really pretty much meaningless when comparing vs. a completely different card.

If someone is gonna spend so little on a couple video cards, they're probably gaming at 1024x768.

congratz you can do basic math, but it doesnt quite work like that with dual card set ups. 2 256mb cards in sli is still only seen as 256mb x2 not both added, same with most of the other stats.
