Open DVD with External Switch

Is this a hard mod to do? If so, then don't waste your time answering because I really don't want to scew anything up trying something above my knowledge level.

But, if it is not too hard, how do you do it?

I've done it and it's actually pretty simple (for me at least). You simply have to connect an external momentary switch in parallel with the one in the drive (does involve opening the drive).

If you open the drive, you see some circuit boards; typically a control board at the back of the drive and at the front a very simple board that holds the eject switch and the activity LED.

The switch actually signals to open/close the tray by shorting the control line to ground. I actually installed a header in the back of my drive for connecting my switch, but tis isn't necessary. Try to find a ground connection near the location where you bring the cabling into your drive (can also be ground pin on the power supply connector). I like tracing the eject control line back as far as possible (at least to the main circuit board) as this reduces clutter; in my drive I was able to trace it back to a solder point on the ribbon cable that connects the 2 circuit boards. (note: my pic has some extra wiring since I also hooked up an external activity LED)

Just for perspective, I placed the header right beside the existing SATA power/data connectors so it isn't really noticeable that the drive has been modded.

Oh, so there is soldering involved? I don't know anything about that.

Soldering is the only way to go to ensure a good electrical connection; gluing won't work.

Soldering isn't that hard to do, all it takes is a steady hand and a decent fine-pointed soldering iron; you'll get better with practice. When soldering I tin the wires (get them coated with solder) before affixing them to the circuit board; I then just have to hold the wire in place and touch the iron on the joint to melt the solder and join the two together.

Dae Ja Voo has an excellent guide for a remote eject switch. Take a look at it.
