Real time ray tracing will make the games much cheaper to program. That's why Microsoft is including it in DX11, and I'm sure that the Khronos group will follow suit with Opengl if it's not already in there.

I keep harping on ray tracing because it's the biggie. Once the games cost half to eighty percent less to make they don't have to sell as many copies to turn a big profit. Combined with digital distribution It would lower the cost of game design back to where a small game dev could theoretically not need a publisher. This would also have the effect of lowering piracy worries so that paying customers wouldn't get punished for what they aren't doing through sercurom and other draconian security measures.

Oh no. They can't do that! I mean what would happen to RPGs? The rich kids can get all the cool stuff and the poor kids are stuck with crap stuff even though they're on a good level? I'm not paying to get my Golden Paladin Armour instead of just killing something for it, that would just feel soo stupid and nerdy!

I'm sure there's other things that need to change but at the moment I can't think of any.
I didn't quote everything 'cause it was a lot of text--so if there's something I missed, let me know. Regarding ray-tracing. I think it's a very long ways away from being applicable to games--like, many years, and it won't be in DX11 sadly... But even if ray-tracing were used, there's no reason to think that (a) it'll cut down on development costs, or (b) it itself won't cost a lot to develop--and of course the developers of ray-tracing (if it's applicable) will want to license that tech to anyone wanting to use it in game development, which might be another source of cost to games. I'd be someone who shat their pants if games EVER cost 50-80% less than what they do now--short of a worldwide depression, that'll never happen based on ray-tracing tech...

But even if games were cheaper--like 80%, i'd be willing to bet that the same number of people would be pirating games (more or less). Let's say a game cost $10 as opposed to $50. I'm guessing people would just rationalize pirating a game by saying, "sheesh, I'm not gonna waste a mere $10 on a game that might suck," in the same way that they're currently saying, "sheesh, I'm not going to waste $50 on a game that might suck." And some people don't pirate games 'cause of the cost, but rather just 'cause they can--so cost of a game probably wouldn't factor into the real number of people pirating. Some, yes, but not all... Meh, who knows how to get around the piracy issue--but I don't think "free" games where you pay for features is the way to go. that would piss me off greatly--I'd rather plunk down the entire cost up front, knowing how much it costs and that I'd be able to do what everyone else will be able to do... I'd probably get BF5 for free, and all you get is the handgun, running around getting pwnd by all the rich guys with machine guns and snipers. That would just deter me more from playing it in the first place (and hence paying for it's features). Sure, others may disagree, but coming from someone who pays for games, this would not encourage me to invest my money in a game anymore...

I thik you're wrong. I think a good 80% of the people pirating would see £5 for a game as nothing. I may or may not piarate games and if I have, or have not pirated a game and I like it, I buy it regardless of the cost. Hwoever, if I see an old game in the PS1/2 box at one of my local retailers, I pick it up and try it out.

Also, you have to take into account people like parents. In the UK, a lot of parents get chipped consoles or pirate games because it's cheap/free. Better that than having to replace £50 discs all the time.

Anyway, games would never cost as little as that. But if they did it would be great.

I agree with about stopping gaming if you have rich arseholes running around with all the best stuff. They only way around this is to make the game free and all the stuff you can pay for is attained for a normal retail price (and they keep selling retail versions)

Just use Steam. I love Steam anyways, and to have all my games (rather than simply most of them ) managed together in one application would be great.

I think all game publishers should put all games through Steam.

I like steam, but I disagree.

Nothing should ever become a monopoly. If steam became the source for games (no pun intended) then it might become the only source. That's a bad path, in my opinion.

Piracy doesn't cost them anything, their just QQing. If someone is going to pirate a game they wouldn't buy it in the first place. It's not like they are taking money, they are just duping something at no cost to the company.

People do not need to stop stealing. Publishers need to lower their prices and stop being greedy. "stealing" is because of the rising prices. Not because people are "stealing"

Fixed. Its the same in every industry, you can make the best game/write the best book/make the best album, but if you can't sell it you don't get squat. I'd be willing to bet that the developers got under 20% of those profits for doing 99% of the work.

heres an idea. maybe if it didn't cost half our paycheck to buy a game people wouldnt steal them! ( i know it wouldn't eliminate it, but i certainly imagen alot more people would buy the games) this way im sure they can still make more money then "buying a tshirt for a dollar"
