Overclocking a Phenom X3 8450

Thread Starter
Hi, most of you have a lot of experience out there and might probably laugh at this post.

But, I would really like to know if this chip can be overclocked or not. It is a long story on how I got this CPU, not what I originally wanted (wanted a 6000+).

The guy at the PC shop sort of convinced me that 3 cores are better than two. I bought this PC on Friday and assembled over the weekend

So this is what I have :
AMD X3 Pehom 8450 @ 2100 Mhz (Stock) with stock cooling
ASUS M3A m/b with latest BIOS - downloaded this weekend
Transcend JetRam - DDR2 800 - 2x 1Gb modules
Seagate 320 Gb HDD @ 7200 rpm - SATA II with 16 Mb Cache
NVidia 7800 GTX with 512MB RAM
Windows Vista Home Premium 32 bit

My Vista Score is 5.4. My processor is the lowest. RAM gets 5.9, 3D Graphics gets 5.9, Vista Aero graphics gets 5.9 and my HDD gets 5.6.

I know that most of you would probably say that this means nothing. But I do not have a legal copy of 3DMark06 to bench my machine. All I have is Vista.

It bugs me that my proc scores the lowest. I still wonder if that 2800 Mhz 5600+ would have given me a higher score ?

My proc used to score 5.3 over the weekend, but them I messed in the bios and changed something that was supposed to be 200 to 210. My PC booted, and cpu-z told me that my cpu is now running at 2200 Mhz. I then let Vista rate my PC again and it then changed to 5.4. I decided to get professional help and I changed everything back to AUTO in the bios. According to cpu-z everything is back to the way it was. BUT when I let Vista rate my PC again, it stayed at 5.4, I thought it would have dropped to 5.3 again ?

So, can I over clock ? How much with stock cooling ? Is it safe ? Will it help me at all ? What do I do / change in my bios ? Please note, I'm not a pc guru and this might sound like stupid questions, but I really need help. I tried AMD Overdrive - can't change anything. That is why I posted this question.

Thanks

You should be able to overclock some. I have no idea how good the board is for overclocking though.

You can start by looking here:http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&s...ng&btnG=Search

I know for one that you will have to set AI overclocking to Manual. From there you will have to experiemnt with different FSB Frequencies and HT Link Speeds.

Hope that helps.

Legal copy of 3DMark06? You can download that for free last time I did that?

You'll want to get an aftermarket heatsink for that CPU. The one that comes with it can barely handle the CPU at stock let alone overclocked. I have on in my Media Center and on stock cooling would hit 70c w/o an overclock. As far as how much room you have to OC I couldn't tell ya as my Mobo doesn't really have any options for that

Try reading this, it may help you understand more what overclocking is about and how to do it.

P.S. You should of went with a different video card and the guy at the PC Shop is a retard

Oh yeah, I forgot about your videocard. How much did you spend on it? The reason I ask is because that card is now about 4 generations old.

Thanks, I have printed the overclocking guide and will try to make sense at home. I did not buy the video card, I got it for free from a guy whom I work with. I decided that I will use this one (my previous card was a FX5200) and early next year buy a 200 series card.

Is this CPU ok ? I was in the shop that day and I researched the 6000+. But because everyone aound here was out of stock on AMD CPU's, he found this one for me. I'm not sure how this cpu will do, but I want to use this machine as a media centre with MythTV or freevo, dual boot with Vista. (I live in a small place, PC needs to multitask - LOL). At the same time, I want to use this machine to edit my home videos of my real hobby - RC Heli's.

I read somewhere that ffmpeg cannot multithread yet and a CPU with higher speed is prefered, because of this. I was shocked to get home and see I have only got a 2100Mhz where I sort of aimed for 2800 to 3000 Mhz.

Be Careful with the guide you are reading, AM2+ Phenoms work slightly differently in some aspects to AM2 athlons.

For a start, with your phenom, as well as having to worry about RAM and HT speeds, The speed of the 3rd Level Cache and Memory controller is also determined from the reference clock. This works on its own seperate divider, similar to the HT speed. On your phenom this will be defaulted at a 9x multi for a speed of 1800Mhz. The HT will be the same frequency, but its effective speed is doubled to make 3600Mhz on your CPU, due to HT3.

Also, you have different RAM dividers as well:

6:6 = 400Mhz
7:6 = 533Mhz
10:6 = 667Mhz
12:6 = 800Mhz
16:6 = 1066Mhz

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/cpu...e_8.html#sect0

This page gives you an idea of some of the more finer points of phenom overclocking.

Phenom OC'ing IS VERY DIFFERENT TO ATHLON OC'ING.

I am having severe problems overclocking my Phenom 8450 on the M3A. I can only get up to 207 FSB. I tried alot of settings, can someone give me some idea on what I am missing?

****Update****

I got some head way and I am up to 2.6 GHz. The page from xbitlabs really helped me figure it out. Now it seems I have to tweak the memory settings.

You should read the reviews for the M3A on phenom overclocking. Its horrid, it can barely overclock the new phenoms yet alone the 8450. I hope you updated your bios too. I have the same board and it can oc like theres no tomorrow. Anyways I recommand getting an Athlon if your planning to OC. As for your 8450 you should ask for a refund and get the 6000+

try reading this review for the M3A maktas http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/...d.php?t=171582
