I'd like to upgrade my old Nvidia 6800 GS with a good card....?

Any suggestions that will work with the motherboard?

How much did you want to spend?

I would find a used Pentium D and get a 8800GS.
Once again...

Yea i wouldn't recommend spending very much, unless you are planning a major upgrade soon.

I agree with Duckie, a cheap 8800gs, here is one at the egg for 80$ after MIR: link

Will a PCIe 2.0 card work in my older board?

Sweet...didn't know that.

OK so - if I were going to do a new system next year, should I bother buying something good now (9800 series) or wait and see what's out then?

Yep, go with a Pentium D and an 8800GS. In fact, if you don't want to spend that much on graphics, get an 8600GTS. That will hold you until you can upgrade.
