1. Yes the author hates nVidia.

2. It's the LAPTOP parts NOT THE DESKTOP parts that are failing.

3. Not all parts will go bad, it's just that the failure rate for these parts is higher than normal.

4. This is a real issue as nVidia has taken a $200 million charge off to fix the problem.

5. Stop posting that your 8600 GTS in your DESKTOP is running fine as they are not the source of the problem.

Except it IS the desktop parts that are at risk. Not usually failing due to how often desktops are turned off and back on, but it is going to be a big issue in a few months / years.

Just look at the 7900GT, quite a lot had memory issues, and people are still having to RMA them to this day due to the issue.

If this were true the nVidia section would be filled with complaints. The majority of us here at OCN are not exactly gentle with our hardware. If there were inherently "bad" pieces of hardware out there...OCN members would find it.

...and I'd honestly take the word of drunken nun then believe some thing in the inquirer

Oh crap. Just opened up GPU-Z and saw G84...

ATI is really grabbing my attention a lot lately. I'm almost certain I'm going to switch to ATI now.

You have to be kidding me... Even if the majority of OCN isn't gentle chances are they don't constantly turn their computer on and off. Things fail all the time here for people. They just RMA it like normal.

so why aren't the desktop parts dying? They are, you are just low enough on the bell curve that you don't see it in number that set off alarm bells publicly yet.

Laptops get turned on and off many times in a day, and due to the power management, throttle down much more than desktops. This has them going through the heat cycle multiple times in a day, whereas desktops typically get turned on and off once a day, sometimes left on for weeks at a time. Failures like this are typically on a bell curve, so they start out slow, build up, then tail off.

My understanding of the problem is that it's the extreme heat produced by the notebook parts and the cycling from hot to cold that causes the failures. I don't think any of the desktop parts approach the high temps that the notebook parts face.

Mine didn't fry after playing through crysis single player for the 20 hours it took on high settings, despite getting 9-28 FPS.
