Honestly, i don't think you can go wrong with any X38/48 board. They all OC like champs.

That being said, go with the Asus P5E, and flash it's bios to the rampage bios.

P45 doesn't support full 32 lanes of PCIe at x16/x16 it supports a maximum of 16 lanes at x8/x8.

Ok, I am really liking the rampage. I don't want to flash a BIOS of a rampage onto the P5E.

So I guess the Rampage it is. I shall be pairing it up with 2 x 2GB Dominator 1066Mhz as well for some higher RAM performance.

Add to that either an E8500 or a Q9550.

Its primary use will be gaming and general windows use. I have had two quads so far and loved them both... But the pure speed of a 4Ghz+ Dual core appeals to me actually.

What should the CPU be? Q9550 or E8500?

This is designed to replace my sig rig by the way.**

Why not just keep your current Q6700 for the meantime? Its a more than capable processor, and it has the added bonus of being free (you already own it)

definitely go for the rampage. you won't e disappointed. its by far the best mobo i've ever owned. with a cpu like mine getting it to speed of over 3.6 ghz requires a very strong and stable northbridge because beyond 3.6ghz with a q9450 is simply just fsb ocing. With that said i am happy to say that I have reached 3.9Ghz stable with my quad on just air (its only at 3.2 right now because i am currently lapping my TRUE and it is running off its stock heatsink)

but seriously, you will love it.

as for a new cpu, personally i would have to second the notion of you simply keeping your q6700; but if i had to choose i would go with a q9550 (you can reach 4Ghz on these with very little work on a rampage, especially with water cooling on the cpu and nb) only because once you have already gone quad, to me getting a dual core just seems like a downgrade in the back of my mind no matter what the speed IMO. I also just like futureproofing as much as I can

If I didn't get such a great deal on my Asus Maximus Formula, I would have gotten a Gigabyte X48-DQ6.

A board to look into is the Gigabyte X48 DS4.

No reviews anywhere but not only is it the least expensive X48 I've seen but it also does not have the crazycool plate on the back like the DQ6, so no issues with backplates.

plenty of newegg reviews liking it.
