Disable Crossfire on an X2?

Thread Starter
I've never had one but in the back of my mind at the moment to possibly wait for a 4870x2. Is it possible to disable one of the GPUs in case the first few months have shady driver support? Or are X2's a bit better than what crossfire is when its generally first released? Would just be concerned about not being able to use the card at all due to dual gpu crashes at first due to new drivers.

Supposedly AI Catalyst turned to standard (from advanced) disables one core. I tested this with Crysis benchmark and the FPS fell on it's face.
