Abit AX78

Thread Starter
Hey guys,

Thinking of getting an AX78 for my new build with a 5000+ X2 BE, I would be hoping to upgrade to maybe a 9850 X4 BE after a few months, does the Abit AX78 officially support 125w CPU's, or would even a 9950 X4 be compatable (take into consideration this CPU is 140w).

One thing that has me worried is that I'm purchasing a Radeon 4850 along with it, and I may choose to go crossfire down the line. How will the second 4x PCIe lane affect performance??

Thanks for the information guys,

Chris

Your best bet would be to contact Abit Tech Support directly to get the definitive answer:

The board will take a phenom 9850. A new BIOS rev that is due to be released will increase support between the board and the processor.

In fact, while the abit site only says 9500 and 9600, the board will happily run with any 95w phenom.

It will work with the 9850 as well, although the 4-phase PWM circuitry will limit the OC'ability. But rest assured it works.

Dont take a 9950 near it though, else the caps start going pop.

Also, with regards to the crossfire thing, you will be looking at similar performance to twin x8 slots, if maybe a bit lower. Both PCI-E slots are 2.0 so the bandwidth hit wouldnt be as huge as, say, the same config on a P35 mobo.

The AX78 is a GREAT Phenom platform. I have 0 complaints with it. It games VERY WELL! I have not tried the 2nd PCI ex slot though. Maybe google or check 3dmark06 archives.... Good luck!

If you're going for 9850bes with this mobo, go easy on the vcore, above 1,45 and the mosfets might as well pop.

The pci-e 2.0 x4 lane have about the same bandwidth as the pci-e 1.1 X8 lane afaik, the performance hit will probably only be measurable in benchmarks like 3dmark06/vantage.

I got the vcore to 1.5 with the board but it was hot and unpredictable with the Mult > 13 and MHz 213 to give me 2.73 GHz a core... If you bring the VCore back down to 1.5 or 1.475 you can bring the Multiplier up some. I strongly reccomend the TT Big Typhoon with the CPU it brought the temp down a whole 10 C from the AMD Cool Pipe cooler! Idles at 39 C...
