Freakishly wierd Vista and Windows Server 2003 issue...

Ok, I am currently taking a class that rquires me to have Windows Server 2003 installed. I've taken other classes that I needed it, but for all those I had Server 2003 installed on a separate machine. I've since started using Linux on my servers so I though I would just set up a dual boot on my main rig of Windows Server 2003 Enterprise 64 and Vista Ultimate 64. And here is the problem.

Any time I start up or restart the machine I must boot into Server 2003 and restart and then choose Vista for Vista to start up. If I choose Vista first off it will give me a BSoD right before the little Vista cricle logo would pop up. Why should some thing like this need to happen? I've done it countless(at least 50+) times so I know that this is what is going on. As long as I start up in Server 2003 and then restart and choose Vista every thing works flawlessly.

I have re-installed Vista several times on different hard drive partitions, Re-installed Server 2003 three times, tried different drivers, applied all SP's and updates...I am just at a loss. It really isn't that big of a deal I guess...it just makes my Vista start up time really long. I am just really annoyed by it I guess.

Ay one have any ideas as to what might be causing this?

What order are you installing in?? This would be the first thing i would look at. Windows is purposefully built NOT to dual boot because they don't want you running anything other than windows. Do a clean format, install vista FIRST, then install Server 03.

I've tried in both orders. Each has the same effect. There is one other thing I am thinking of trying. Install one OS...unplug that hard drive...and then install the other OS. Then I'll open boot options and select which hard drive to boot from since each should have a working boot sector. I've never tried this before, but I think it will work. Though I really did not want to devote a whole hard drive to Windows Server 2003 since it is only installed for purposes of this class.

Though I guess this isn't that big of a deal...but just highly annoying. I guess I should just be happy both OS's work at all.

yeah, that's ntldr, maybe it's the bootloader causing the problems? Maybe try grub (ubuntu's bootloader)

Code:
1. Boot from a Live CD, like Ubuntu Live, Knoppix, Mepis, or similar.

2. Open a Terminal. Go SuperUser (that is, type "su"). Enter root passwords as necessary.

3. Type "grub" which makes a GRUB prompt appear.

4. Type "find /boot/grub/stage1". You'll get a response like "(hd0)" or in my case "(hd0,3)". Use whatever your computer spits out for the following lines.

5. Type "root (hd0,3)".

6. Type "setup (hd0,3)". This is key. Other instructions say to use "(hd0)", and that's fine if you want to write GRUB to the MBR. If you want to write it to your linux root partition, then you want the number after the comma, such as "(hd0,3)".

7. Type "quit".

8. Restart the system. Remove the bootable CD.
Though im not sure how to re-write ntldr back to the mbr in case it doesnt solve the problem, you could find a guide in google.

And it doesnt need to be off a livecd, you can just boot into ubuntu and do the commands.

Install EasyBCD, and scan for problems with the bootloader.

EDIT: Actually, PM me, and I can help you out. I think I know what it is. There is this problem with XP, that when you install it after Vista, it corrupts the Vista bootloader. I think that is what is going on here.

Send me a PM if you have like MSN or anything and I will tell you what you should do.
