Auzentech X-Fi Prelude - Can't hear some 5.1 channel sounds

so I bought an auzentech x-fi prelude a while ago, it's absolutely amazing. one issue i have with them is that when I try to play a dvd / anything with 5.1 channel support, I can only hear the background of the sound. For example, i have the simpsons s3 on dvd and i tried to watch an episode today, so i played it with VLC and the audio device defaulted to 5.1 channel as it should, because I have Z-5500's and windows vista is set to use 5.1 channel sound in the control panel.

So i play an episode, but i only hear the theme song, no voices / anything the characters say. I can hear everything but speech / scream etc. The levels for the speakers are all at full, so i'm confused.

i have the latest drivers, I even tried reinstalling them (cleaned with driver sweeper) to no avail. I tried to see if it was the audio mode by changing to game mode, then entertainment mode, then audio recording mode. all 3 had the same problem.

something odd that probably has something to do with it:
when i open control panel > sound > configure "speakers" > and then test all of my speakers + sub, just the front left + right are getting the correct sound. if i click the sub, the sound goes to my rear right speaker. if i click center the sound goes to my rear left speaker. if i click rear left the sound comes from my center speaker. if i click rear right, i hear nothing (probably because it's going to my sub which wouldnt play that sound).

all the connections to my sub are correct. if i plug the center speaker into the rear left slot on my sub it plays correctly, and the same applies to plugging my rear left speaker into the center slot.

speakers are connected to my x-fi with the direct cable (green black and orange one)
weird, huh?

If you're sure the wires are going to the sub correctly, are you sure its plugged into the card correctly? Thats all I can think of. Otherwise maybe try another pair of 5.1 speakers and see if its just your z5500's.

man its annoying how most problems have such a simple solution that you overlook. i had the rear + center/sub cables reversed.

thanks!
