Well I have had a Q6600 and Q6700 and loved them both. I am in the process of deciding what CPU to have in my new rig which I shall start buying parts for soon.

Motherboard: ASUS Rampage X48 DDR2
GFX: 2 x HIS 4870's
RAM: 2 x 2GB 1066Mhz Dominators

I want nothing less that 3.8Ghz on whatever CPU I choose.

The cooling will be air (OCZ Vendetta 2) and may go over to water eventually but as I only want 45nm, that may not be needed.

So...

Do I want either an E8500 or a Q9550.

I know the E8500 will surpass 4Ghz with ease probably which is why I like the idea of that speed even though it is a dual core. But I am a quad veteran and addict with an issue.

Will the Q9550 be able to do 3.8Ghz and upwards on less that 1.36v?

Thats all I want to know really. E8500 or Q9550

Wait for E8600 or Q9650

Or else get E8400 or Q9450 for the better multis...

OMG....

There is nothing to prove that the Q9650 is coming out for a start.

The Q9450 only has an 8x which is going to limit me big time.

Answer my question please. I don't need to be told what I already know about other hardware and upcoming hardware.

With Vendetta 2, I think the 8.5x should have better chance to 3.8G so I would say Q9550 but you upgrade quite often, To take advantage of 9.5x E8500. Overall, my vote to Q9550.

I have a 9550 on same mobo. I keep it at 3.6ghz 24/7. I use it for visual effects and 3d animation. Great CPU...a little pricey...
quad core all the way!

Bus Core ratios:

E8500 (9.5) > E8400 (9.0)

Q9550 (8.5) > Q9450 (8.0)

Leave it to an AMD fan to make no sense.

Edit:

It totally depends on your apps/games.

But I'd consider the E8400 over the E8500 simply because the E8400 clocks virtually as high as the E8500 for less $$$.

But I own both an E8500 and a QX9650 and the E8500 is in my rig >90% of the time..

Ah yes, you have it at 3.6 on 1.31 if I am correct.

You see, I have had 3.6 on two quads and wanted to aim for something a little higher this time.

Do you feel that you exploit the quads that you currently have? If so, stick with the Quad. You shouldn't have trouble hitting 3.8 with the new one. I'm a big multitasker, so I love my Quad to death...never going back
