[tcMag] PowerColor equips HD4850 with 2GB of memory

While the word 'overkill' comes to mind, together with 'extra cost with no real (performance) gain' it's nice noting that PowerColor is currently building a Radeon HD 4850 card with no less than 2GB of on-board memory, four times the 'regular' amount. Equipped with one 55nm, 800 Stream Processors-boasting RV770 GPU clocked at 665 MHz (625 MHz stock) and 2000 MHz-clocked memory, the upcoming card features CrossFireX, DirectX 10.1 and PCI-Express 2.0 support.

For the new card PowerColor has dumped the reference cooler and used a larger, dual-slot system with an all-copper heatsink. No word on pricing or availability but that's not really a problem right?

That seems stupid, However 4 of them if drivers improve would probably kill at really high resolutions.

This will reduce my system memory to 0GB [it won't boot] since memory is shared between all MMIO (Memory-Mapped Input Output) devices - this includes graphics cards.

The more VRAM you have, the less OS RAM you get.

What a waste. I can see noobs buying this card and thinking "wow it has 2gb, it must be good" Its exactly the same as the 1gb 8800gt, but worse.

Another option is like in Gentoo, to map 1GB to the system memory and leave 1GB for the GPU

A 1 GB 4850 wouldn't be too bad imo, but 2GB is fairly useless. how much does memory increase power consumption, if at all?

1GB of VRAM is useful when you go Crossfire. 2GB might be better if you put more than 2 of these babies together and rev up the resolution to stupid amounts.
