Look around, GT200 has horrendous yield ~40% while RV770 or whatever it is called has much, much higher yields as high as 70+%
I run my 4870 at 820/1310 at the moment - trying to get 845/1400 stable with correct voltages We're talkin single card probably running 19K's+ in 3dmark06 by the time I'm done. On a side note, I can now flash my 4870 back to the original BIOS without the assistance of a MONITOR - don't ask lol

You could ask just about any gamer - a computer wiz or not where this comes from: "The way its meant to be played"

They would all know and tell you Nvidia - just the fact that they know about the company is the start - if they were just on the search for a card they would likely go to nvidia first simply because Nvidia acutally bothers to advertise.

Besides the point .... what does it matter that much right now what the next gen stuff is going to do ... the gtx200 series is blowing games away ppl are getting 250+ fps in cod4 alone... on decent res apparently - we should be more interested in a 280x2 or 260x2.... these cards are way ahead of the gaming industry... so why worry?

why are people going on and on about how nvidia is letting ATI come back, and then is going to pound them again--to be quite honest, I haven't seen anything where the gtx280 is beaten by the 4870--they're close, but the 280 comes out ahead, right? It's just that the price point of the 4870 is so much lower, there's little reason to think that the 280 is worth it... I imagine the same thing will happen with this new gtx300 series cards--yeah, they're probably going to kick ass, but what about the price? I find it hard to believe with the apparent losses nvidia is taking with the gtx200 series cards that the gtx300 series cards will be a good bargain either...

Also, is anyone else getting the feeling that hardware capabilities are surpassing game requirements? Like, yeah, the cards are kicking ass, but what game needs it right now. However, I guess I'm ignoring the high-res gamers out there...I am still on the "uber-low resolution" of 1280x1024 (and loving it!).

i could say the same for the 4870 80%-95% performance of a GTX280 and $200 less ...but its price that matters 95% of the time. sure ppl know the Nvidia logo "the way it's..." but when it comes to upgrade how many average gamers most gamers are 12-18 years old have $500 to get a graphics card ? and most have a Dell or Hp how can a GTX280 fit in there? the 4850 or 8800GT would be their better choice

Yeah I am looking around I and not seeing anything compelling on that. Just a lot of speculation and rumors getting thrown around. 1 outlet reports it and then everyone else reports it and confirms it with each other and it is basically just a big round robin all coming from the same charlie guy at Inquirer.

Sounds like fishy info to me... I just read another article stating that both ATI and Nvidia were taping out for the switch from 55nm to 40nm, why would they just throw a 45nm in there real quick?

One of the two sources is BS.

Hey, believe what you will, but business announcements such as nvidia's massive reduction in sales projection (yes, $400 million reduction is HUGE) and the announcing of a $150-250 million writedown due to "pressure from competition" tells me that there yields are bad and that they are taking a bath in GTX200's pool of blood.

Come on Licht. I expect more from you. The ATI RV700 is as monolithic as the GT200!

Funny AMD "fanboys" slammed Intel for not having "true" and "monolithic" quad core. I thought they would at least know what it means when they slam Nvidia for having the "monolithic" video card.

Furthermore the GT200 has excellent power consumption. Better than RV700!

I don't know where everyone is getting all this yield data and profit margins from both ATI and Nvidia? I haven't seen them?
RV700 has better power consumption then the GTX280.

Advanced Micro Devices' ATI graphics chip unit doesn't want to build "huge" chips like rival Nvidia, an executive says.
But an Nvidia exec says smaller isn't always better or more efficient.
Such statements will help define how the two chip giants do battle at the high end of the graphics chip market in the coming years.
One of the largest graphics chips yet will be Nvidia's upcoming high-end GTX 280. This is the kind of chip that high-end gaming enthusiasts crave. But great performance often means a large transistor count. And the GTX 280 is expected to have both.
Here is an Asus board using AMD-ATI 3870 X2 that will be superseded by the new X2 board.
(Credit: Asus)
AMD, of course, also intends to deliver extreme graphics technology with its upcoming X2, a follow-on to the current 3870 X2 series. And AMD wants to be clear: its strategy is fundamentally different than Nvidia's.
"We took two chips and put it on one board (X2). By doing that we have a smaller chip that is much more power efficient," said Matt Skynner, vice president of marketing for the graphics products group at AMD.

EDIT : More evidence showing the 4870 does in fact use less power. (Although not at idle.)
