Raid 0 Array Failed

Thread Starter
Never thought I'd see the day. I was watching a movie on my PC when it started to freeze up and lag. I restarted my system and it said one of my HDDs in the array failed. I reset bios settings to see if it would find my drive, but it didn't.

The thing is that the drive spins up normally and it doesn't make any weird noises. When I press delete to enter bios at the boot screen, it doesn't go into bios for at least 20 seconds, as if it's trying to find the drive. Then I hear the drive spin down and back up and then it goes to bios. Depending on which port I use, it either doesn't show up or shows up as a blank drive.

Any suggestions to restore this drive? I really don't want to lose everything in my array. The drive is a WD5000AAVS GreenPower.

TIA

I would try to go into your RAID config and see if it will "see" the 2 hard drives were previously in RAID and try to rebuild them. Otherwise, I hope you had data backed up.

As far as restoring, you will have to piece back together 128kb pieces so not really practical.

Check this out. Just found it in a google search, dont know how well it works.

To verify if your raid array has failed try to run SpinRite and run the utility to check out your drives. If the drives have failed it might be challenging to save any information. It's worth a shot....this program saved me the other day.

Yea, if that does not work, you are pretty much toast

It might be a motherboard hardware failure. Sounds like one of your ports (sata?) failed. If you have other ports that work with RAID try one of them with a recovery disk of some kind. GParted may be able to find more information about the disks.

Thanks for the quick responses guys! Since I can't boot into windows I'll have to use a dos application to analyze the drives, so I'll try SpinRite. I don't know how the Quick Recovery for Raid app would work if I can't boot into windows. Would I have to connect the drives externally to another PC or something? I was thinking about connecting the failed drive externally to see if I can revive it.

I ran across something the other day about using Knoppix to recover from a RAID failure. I'll see if I can't find it...

I know this is a really stupid answer, but check to make sure that everything is plugged in correctly

Just this week I was bugging out over a RAID problem and it turned out that the power plug came loose because of the tension on the cable.
