Build for Dad. Let me swing this by you guys.

I already have all the parts not listed in the list.

..
My main concern is the motherboard and processor. I'm not really up to date on what is out, so I want to swing this by you guys at OCN before I go for it. This build will be for my father who doesnt really need video power, but processing speed is a must.
.
.
Edit-Will this mobo work with the CPU?

That's a good budget Cpu...but the mobo leaves something to be desired. If that's what your budget can handle though, it'll work just fine .

That's what the budget allows, but what would be missing?

Looks good, but besides the support for 8gb and more PCI slots, is there a difference?

It is a big difference, it does not have an integrated graphics card.

If you want integrated graphics, I think everybody agrees that AMD's 780G or nv8300 are by far the best IGP chipsets, both for AM2+. You could add up a X2 5000+ Black edition, or a cheaper X2 4400+ to make an excelent media center/office build, even good for light (WoW like) gaming..

Intel's G35 leaves a lot to be desired, and the nv7100 you linked is old, hot and low performing. If you go Intel in my oppinion you don't really have a choice: you need a discrete graphics card (ATI3450, nV8400gs) if there is even the slightest desire to run a game.

Other than that the ram is great. The HDD (I have 3 of them) has an anouying high-pitched wiss that becomes noticeable if the rig happens to be silent. Other that that it's a fast hdd and cheap also.

Good luck with the build.

Old and low performing? Are you referring to the GPU series, or the actual motherboard specs? Graphics arent needed. I wanted to avoid getting a discrete GPU. I'm interested in a motherboard with integrated video of any kind that supports at least 800mhz ram and OC's decently. It must be Intel. We're talking about a dad here.
What would you recommend?

So the conditions are Intel, and no discrete graphics.

I've browsed for a half hour, and frankly with integrated graphics it's like a void for Intel CPUs, but there are still a couple alternatives. I'll list them in the order of price.
  • Chipset nVidia 7050 (same as 7100 but lower GPU clock speed) ECS 42$ I'm 99% tho that it doesn't OC.
  • The XFX you linked, if it OCs, is actually a good alternative, at first I didn't realize how limited the choices are on the Intel front
  • The last one: the only decent combo I could find that OCs is a bit more expensive, but performs MUCH better: Gigabyte P31 mobo (64$) + nVidia 7100GS vid card (19$). I know it was no disctrete gfx cards, but the options are very limited.

In regards to integrated graphics on Intel platforms, you should know using an IGP slows down the rig considerably because of technical reasons: Intel uses FSB for CPU/MEM communications, the IGP will aslo need memory thus it will compete with the CPU for the memory. Since the bandwidth isn't enormous to begin with (unless you get FSB1600 cpu) there is a noticeable performance hit. That's the first reason I consider a discrete VID card a necessity if going Intel. The second reason is that even if you'd consider the performance hit acceptable, the IGPs for lga775 are far below the IGPs for AM2+ from the following pow: performance (2x) driver quality (..x) features, power consumption. Check this review to see what I'm talking about:
comparison between G35 and 780G with OCing

To sum up, my opinion is if you decide to go Intel get the P31 mobo that should OC according to the newegg reviews, and a discrete graphics. You'd get a 15-20% performance boost without OCing only from not using an IGP. The integrated ones are garbage for the money, you must pay 80$ for a G35?!

In the advent you'd go AMD you could have the 780G with good performance, features, power consumption and more importantly good drivers at a price around 60$. For AMD there's also the option of nvidia's 780A that supplies integrated graphics and hybrid SLI... as good as it gets IMHO, but at a higher $$ tag.

You have quite a few options, good luck with the build.
