Gaming Rig: E8500 oc'd or Q9450...oc'd?

Thread Starter
I'm building a new gaming rig and some people have tried to sway me away from a quad to a duo for gaming. I want to know if an E8500 or 8600 is more bang for my buck than a quad? This will be my gaming rig and i wont be doing much multitasking.

Those dual core CPUs are great overclockers. But why are you exchanging your Q6600 for a dual core?

Bang for buck? An E8400 then. Unless u want to pay 80 bucks for a 0.5 multi and 160mhz higher stock speed.

Honestly I would just stick with what you got, the q6600 is no slouch, just clock the hell out of it, you will be more than satisfied.

I'm building a second rig and it's just for gaming. I don't mind paying extra money for all i care with the price tag of these Quads i'll get an E8600!

Yeah, the only difference between the E8400 and E8500 is the multiplier. The former comes with a 9x multi and the latter with a 9.5. The ~$70 difference isn't worth the extra overclocking option. The E8600 will probably cost around $350 making it an even worse option for priceerformance. The E8400 is the sweet spot.

get an e84 if your buying it now if not wait on the e86.

i would love to have a x10 multi on this chip

Whether you're buying it now or a month from now, I'd still vote on the E8400. I don't think a 10x multi is going to be worth probably a 70% increase in price.

Unless you are going to get the most expensive GPU and Sli them there is no need for a processor of the calibare. Even through you are building a hole new system i would be tempted to put that Q6600 in your new one and buy a cheaper CPU for your sig rig. You are abviously farmiliar with OCing so get somethin like a E4X00 and OC it and save yourself some cash. The money you save would be better spent on the GPU because this is where the frame rate comes from and everyone wants a strong frame rate. What GPU did you have in mind getting by the way?
