Vista

Now, I say I'm new to Vista because I've never had it on my personal PC. I've used it on clients computers etc.

I recently received the "Free Vista Ultimate" from Microsoft a few days ago and installed it as soon as I ran my jumping ass up the driveway because I was so happy I'd finally get to give Vista a try.

Being someone that has been using Windows XP since 01' it kinda grew on me, I loved it. Everything worked for me when I wanted it to and it did it fast.

Now, I installed Vista.

First install, I totally forgot to use the correct chipset drivers for my motherboard. When I realized this it was to late, I started getting random lockups then BSOD.

Second attempt, Did another fresh install and dug around for the Vista chipset drivers and wiped the dust off of it poped it in and everything worked, video drivers installed flawlessly etc etc.

After walking away from the computer with a smile on my face because I got Vista to work. I came back an hour or two later to see it sitting there using 100% of the CPU constantly with no programs running except Microsoft background programs. I restarted the PC to see if it would fix it but that was a no go. Everytime time I open a window the computer locks up.

Everytime I do CTRL ALT DEL the screen goes black then just sits there.

All my overclocks are back to stock settings and yeah.

So...here I am now. Back to XP...Fresh install, Fresh drivers...New everything.

I really wanna use Vista......It's time to move on and I believe this is my chance.

HALP!!

Apologies if that was totally confusing, 2 days of no sleep is making me a little paranoid. I probably missed something really simple.

You have to redo your OCs from scratch. Vista is a lot different than XP. A lot of times you can't initially go as far as you could in XP. Don't give up on it, it just takes some time to get used to. Start out with all options (ram & processor) on auto, then gradually up the fsb, change voltage and mess with multiplier.

Come join the AM2 Club, we'll get you OC'd in no time.

What? This has nothing to do with my OC's...? I could careless about the OC's right now. I can always redo those.

My problem is this: Its sucking up 100% of my cpu time, I open a window the computer freezes and does nothing.

Now go read all the FAQs on the hours of tweaking you're going to have to do to get it to be a smooth-running OS... That's the only way you're going to get to enjoy it. It was the only way I got to enjoy mine.

I can't read anything. It proceeds to lockup when I open a window.

Okay, you installed vista. The processor keeps running @100%. Then it shuts down. Evidently it overheated and crashed. I think it did this because the processor wasn't @ completely normal specs. When I first installed vista on my AM2 machine, something like this happened. Set everything to normal in the bios. Unseat and reseat all ram, then install vista. It should take care of that problem. That is what it took with my 5000BE when I went from XP Pro x64 to Vista. (Sorry about first post)

The machine was @ normal clock speeds after the first reinstall. The 100% usage of the CPU started occurring AFTER I set the clocks to normal. The CPU is not overheating, it has no reason to overheat. Something is using up 100% of the cpu and causing it to crash whenever I open any window.

I caught your edit! (I Think)

The installs were done both times on a formatted drive.
