Lets talk drives now, You think 8 of the cheapest 750+ drives off newegg will be ok? With other cards they have the huge compatibility list etc. I am sure any drives will work, they just don't work to full potential.

Any hard drives should work fine. What do you mean "don't work to full potential"? HD data communication is standardized and relatively simple.

So basically NCQ and old Firmware causes 95% of their issues.

You don't need NCQ for desktop users and firmware should be updated anyways.

Adapter to Convert Loop-Mounts into Screw-Mounts

This IOP heatsink is mounted using via the spring-loop mount. This type of mount was used on older chipset and is not common today. In addition, the older chipsets used 3" loop spacing but this card uses 2.5" spacing. Therefore, it is almost impossible to find a low profile heatsink that will fit on this cards.

However, there is this $5 kit that will convert the loops into screws to increase chipset HSF compatability: http://www.epowerhousepc.com/microco...ole-p-101.html

So if i buy that kit what fan do i want to buy?
just the same one on the webpage?

Those mount adapters only allow you to use some chipset heatsinks/fans. It converts the loops to screw mounts. The stock heatsink uses loops and would no longer be compatible. Therefore, you would need a new heatsink and fan.

The loop mounts suck so much. There are a few chipset heatsinks that will work. The only one that will work natively and not take up too much room is the Jing Ting Force Chipset Cooler. The heatpipe/fins can be rotated. These are no longer sold so good luck finding one.

The stock HS is slightly than 40x40mm. You can try to use screws into the fins to mount a fan. Glue won't work well since it will block airflow and you need to figure where to create the bond points.

If you look in the OP, I ended up adding a laptop heatsink onto my stock cooler. It keeps the card and cooling within one PCI slot still.

PERC doesn't see any drives in PD Mgmt screen.

PERC 5/i installed in a Supermicro X7DVL-E
Using the CBL-0103L cable.
Connecting directly to the SATA drives.
Tried taping off pins 5 & 6.
All the drives have power & data cables connected.
Firmware updated to 5.2.1-0067

What am I missing???

After more reading in different threads, looks like that's the wrong cable... :swearing:
Got some Adaptec 2247500R's on the way. This is the server build that never ends......
