PERC 5/i RAID Card: Tips and Benchmarks - Page 175

could anybody tell me if I can use PERC 5/e or PERC 6/e with non-TBBU memory - standard 512 MB DDR2 ECC stick - memory without battery ? and is there any serious boost performance 256MB vs 512MB cache ? this is not for server - for workstation - and without big files to process.

Got my card cheap off a local Auction site (they sell alot of refurbished/resealed Dell gear) for $15NZD.
Cooler also from same place and is a notebook cooler with fan. Fan only 5v but still too loud and temps from card only 40*c with new cooler.
Small slit ring used to bridge gap between original HS wire clip and hook on perc. Spot of thermal paste under HS to transfer some heat from heatpipes.

**Oh and no tape mod needed on AMD 790FX chipset. Default bios settings the board wouldn't boot with card installed. Tweaking bios for CF somehow fixed it ???
What's the site??? (for us other Kiwis)

I tried a non-registered EEC stick (several actually) in my (5i) card... admittedly I had the battery connected - not sure if that makes a difference or not) and got an error every time.

I know that ECC stick is important - but my question is - can I use non-TBBU memory stick - 512MB stick without battery support? Can I use 512MB stick from 5/i in 5/e ?

This is from PERC 5/i and 5/e UserGuide:

"PERC 5 cards support DELL-qualified 256-MB DDRII 400MHz ECC-registered DIMMs with x16 DRAM
components. Installing unsupported memory causes the system to hang at POST." - and exactly the same sentence is used twice - for 5/e TBBU and 5/i BBU ...

Hey guys i saw this thread and decided to purchase a card. I got it today but am unable to get the computer to post with the card installed. It would repeatedly beep at a very high rate. So i covered pins 5 and 6 and was able to get the board to post and into the Raid card twice. However, whether i use the reset button, turn off and then on or reset by disconnecting the power supply the board just hangs for awhile at a blank screen then starts to beep again. I am not really sure where to go from here and any direction would be nice. Please let me know what you need and i will answer you as fast as i can. Thanks again for any help you can offer.

Mike

Gahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!

It seems that the PERC 6/i will not detect the older Raptor 74GB!

I've tried forced SATA 1.5Gb/s and 3.0Gb/s modes. I've tried Spread Spectrum on/off. I've updated the PERC's firmware.

The PERC 6/i detects other hard drives but just no the Raptors. I have never heard of a case where a HD isn't detected!!!!

Once again...

Thanks... It's the older 74GB 8MB version. I can't get the controller to detect the Physical Disks.
