I didn't even think about the PSU failture - thanks. Found one on eBay for $30. Went ahead and bought it. Thanks!

Ok to bring up the BBU and Write back again. Everyone always says get a BBU etc but what if it is completely used as storage only. And all writes to it are copies of data, essentially moving data over and once moved and verified then deleted from the none raided drive.

Quick question, I realize that the largest partition that WinXP 32bit can see is 2TB, but If I created a raid 5 with 4 1TB drives. Would XP see the array and would I be able to create multiple partitions under 2TB on it or is it limited to arrays that are are 2TB or smaller? I have installed Vista Home Premium 64bit, but my tuner card does not have 64bit drivers so I have to use Windows XP to record shows.

I just got my PERC 5/i in yesterday. I just plugged it into my Gigabyte ga965p-dq6 (rev 1), and I got an immediate beep code. SM-bus conflict. So I found the 2 SM-Bus pins, and cut the lans leading up to them.

Next step was cooling the card. I put some small heatsinks on the chipset of the card, and then put a hot plate from my old GeForce 7950gt on it. mounting it took a while, but I got it on there. I used the hot plate from a gigabyte blue-eye nvidia liquid cooling block (7000 series).

Finally I flashed it to the LSI firmware, and then activated 5x300gb raid5. Wow so much faster then the ich8r controller. I was running 4x300gb raid5 on the ich8r controller. Note: the ich8r controller has 6 ports on my board, but it will not allow an array to have more then 4 drives, and if you install your OS to the ich8r and have an unsafe shutdown it'll have to verify the array on the following reboot, order a pizza, because then you wont see your desktop for an hour or so. (ghetto)

I will post some pictures of the cooler once I dig out my camera, and a macro lens. I just moved to a new apartment, everything aside my computer is still in boxes.

System Specs:
gigabyte ga956p-dq6 (rev 1)
P4D 955 EE liquid / 400w peltier cooled, over clocked to 4.20ghz
4x1gb corsiar dominator ddr2 1066mhz
5x300gb raid5 (liquid cooled perc5i)
1x1tbgb ich8r
2x500gb raid1 (jmicron)
geforce 8800 gts 640mb
thermaltake liquid cooled case w/custom liquid cooling and peltier cooling.

It supports larger the 2TB partitions, currently i use 4X1TB drives in a raid 5. You need to use GPT and not MBR.

*EDIT*
Sorry didnt see the XP 32bit.
2TB is the partition limit, you can create the VD as a larger size and split it up via partitions in XP 32bit

I'm really interested in your before/after benchmarks and your cooling.

The stock cooling is freaking inadequate and I really wished they didn't use loop-mounts.
