PERC 5/i RAID Card: Tips and Benchmarks - Page 189

devsk, try 7.0.1-0051 or 7.0.1-0056 firmware. 0051 is confirmed by multiple people to not experience the warm-boot issue, and 0056 also has people (albeit less) confirming the same.

Bonz, how much stuff do you have in the array? I hope those numbers are not at empty, then your 5 x RAID-5 sounds very freaggin' decent for a $100 card with 350MB/s average.
Do you mean the 7200.12 drives? If so, I've seen a benchmark with them before right here: http://www.overclock.net/hard-drives...dness-56k.html

Bonz, you should have 3.3TB with 5 x 1TB...?

Also, I wonder if with 8 drives in RAID-5 the average would go up, or actually end up dropping a bit?
What do you mean partial capacity? If you mean to partition them, it depends. 1st, if the array is larger than 2TB it must be a GPT partition, and you cannot install Windows on a GPT partition. 2nd, the front end of the RAID will always be the fastest, so if you partition say... 100GB off the front, it will be wicked fast.

It's 3.63TB after RAID5. There is always a theoretical limit, whether it be disk limit, or bus bandwidth. There is always a drop off point for disk limit. 8 disks should be wicked fast. I plan on doing 8 of these drives after I build my i7 rig.

I'm using the .51 firmware and I have never experienced the warm boot issue. I've used this card on a P45 and a 680i.

about the partial capacity, I was asking cause he has two 1TBs working at 750GB with one of his drives being a 750

I would think that it would use the front of the disk, hence not affecting performance at all (provided the TB is faster than the 750's)

Edit: Check last page for screenshot if you did not see.

The only thing I am worried about is the card's reliability... if it runs hot it scares me. Even with tons of cooling added... but I guess this card has been around for ever now. Correct? I wonder if I can get a new one cheap?

I am using an Antec PCI slot fan blowing on my card and it's cool. Without any airflow it gets really hot.

You won't find a brand new one cheap. Get a working pull from eBay and you will be happy. If it breaks after a while, it's only $100 in the hole right?

I individually benchmarked the 1 TBs and 750 Gbs. 1TB being 3platter, were faster than 750G. I am sure if I take out 750G and add another 1TB, I will gain some more performance. Will leave that for next upgrade for now. I am happy with the performance for data access for now. Compared to what I had earlier where I had individual drives doing like 70MB/s max.

Active cooling keeps the temps in upper 40's to lower 50's (measured with IR thermometer) for me. Its a PCI fan (link was posted in here somewhere, I will post if I find it: its on newegg for 16$) in a PCI slot right next to the card throwing air at it. Rest is stock cooling on the card. Good air circulation in the case is the key.

Any idea of the stock heatsink w/o airflow?

Please do post the link if you still have it.

Yes, if you could measure it with the same gun without the air flow it would be nice.

Only if you can get the RAID to work again without any data loss with a new one... is that possible?

Can you get me a link to the fan?
