Yes, if you could measure it with the same gun without the air flow it would be nice.

Only if you can get the RAID to work again without any data loss with a new one... is that possible?

Can you get me a link to the fan?
yeah from what i have heard you can move it from a perc5i to another perc5i and read the array fine or at least this entire thread backs that up (read like every post )

If the card dies, and you replace the card... You re-create the array WITHOUT initializing it. Then you have your array back.

This is the one I got. There are probably smaller and cheaper ones, but I had a gift card to Best Buy so I picked it up.

Do you know this for sure? Ever tried it? If so then there would be nothing holding me back... unless 8 x RAID-5 at 80% capacity gave you under 300MB/s minimum read.

BTW, does that fan blow or suck air? You'd want it to blow.

I have not had my card die on me, but I am sure somebody like Duckie could reassure you on that. I am very positive that you would be fine if you did things right.

Also, I don't think you'd ever get below 300MB/s with 8 drives, unless the array was degraded and you were reading from the back end.

No problem That's what OCNers do.

This really was my first delve into the world of dedicated RAID, so I can't assure you 100% on the issue of having a card die.

From what I understand from many people though is, as long as you re-create the array and DO NOT initialize it, it will see your array again just how it was. It can even be done across certain various controllers.

Can you get me a link to the fan?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835114024

I turned the inner fan 180degrees to blow air at the card, and kept the outer fan at its lowest setting to reduce noise. In default mode, it sucks air when the raid card is to its right (and you are facing the brackets).

I did not measure the temps without the fan because I was scared of lock up. And after seeing some people with lock ups without active cooling, I thought I made the right choice by buying that fan before the card got to me. Now, I have copied so much data in there, I don't really want to do it...;-)

This would be my only worry thus far. I'd really appreciate getting more info on the card swap from anyone that knows more and hopefully someone that tried it.

hope that helps. stumbled upon it randomly
