Did you make any sense of their site? I didn't find anything on swapping cards, just drives.

This really was my first delve into the world of dedicated RAID, so I can't assure you 100% on the issue of having a card die.

From what I understand from many people though is, as long as you re-create the array and DO NOT initialize it, it will see your array again just how it was. It can even be done across certain various controllers.
You dont have to recreate the array. There is a function call "import Foreign Configuration" It will read the setup off the drives and the array is back and working. When I was painting my case I pull 7 drives out and move only the 4 data drive over to the temp machine. When I put the computer back together then I reattach the 3 SAS drive with the OS and I went into bios and imported the foreign configuration and all was good.

Ive moved Raid 0 from Intel controller from and to a PERC5/i card. I doubt raid 5 would, but I believe Raid 1 will also.

Just curious, can you run just one HD off of this card? For instance if you had say 1 Raid 5 array with 4 drives and then just one hd by itself for say storage?

Yeah, I tried those. It fails to boot the card (doesn't find it) some of the times.

yup. Just create a VD of RAID0 for the fifth drive.

Ok, sounds like you did some of this re-build stuff but I am not 100% sure I follow what you are saying here, so I'd love it if you would elaborate a bit more.

Your second post seems to say you had an existing RAID-0 moved from a MoBo to your Perc. That is cool, and a bit encouraging. I am only concerned with being able to replace a Perc 5/i card on a RAID-5 array for a new card in case the card died on me. Do you know if that is possible?

What speed can I expect from a RAID5 array when doing multiple reads?

I can do a sequential read at 200mb/s. But if i go copy two large ISO's to two different HDDs, the speed absolutely plummets. Is that normal?!

EDIT: One transfer is over network(1Gbps) and the other is to a local HDD in the RAID's system.

FINALLY!!!!

I got my card working

I've got it installed in my home server, on a Gigabyte GA-Q35M-S2. I just ordered 3 Caviar Black 1TBs, and have 2x Caviar Greens already installed. Will be running RAID5. Benches will come up when I get the drives.
