After installing, the pc would not boot. After removing 1 DIMM it would boot fine with 3GB. I suspected the combination of all 4 DIMM slots filled was the culprit, so I orderd 2x2GB. Received that today and installed it. Again, no boot. Then I removed the Perc, and the pc booted fine with the 2x2GB.

So, is there a conflict with the Perc and 4GB, or this typical combination? Or might it be the PCI x16 slot and Perc? Or whatever?
Are such problems known and are there any solutions?
It might be your 400W PSU. You might be pushing it too hard. Just a thought. A better PSU can't hurt anyway.

Manyak, Rep+ for posting all your benches.

There is something serious messed up with that 5 x RAID-5... I agree. Your 5 x RAID-0 numbers weren't low, but I think they should also be higher... I wonder if it is those "green" drives running at 5400rpm or all the mix and matching with different buffers or whatever?

Your CPU shouldn't have anything to do with the numbers, the RAID is 100% controlled by the RAID card. Unless I am missing something.

Keep us posted if you have any performance increases from your tweaking.

Thanks

And my two guesses are actually 1) the fact that two drives are significantly slower than the rest, and 2) it does use the CPU a bit (look at the 5 drive benchmarks - one of them had 46% CPU usage with the PC doing nothing else).

I'll see what's up with it tomorrow though, I'm tired and wanna go to bed

Well they are certainly only running as fast as your slowest drives. Maybe you can trade them for one that matches the rest and gain the speed back while sacrificing only one drive's worth of space. You should be able to get someone to agree to that sort of trade easily. Just a thought... or you could have those running in RAID-0 or RAID-1 on the MoBo and use the rest on the card. You have tree so you can run RAID-5 already.

Is this a server type of rig? What's the purpose?

Well, finally got it running on my BloodRage. It turns out it is a bios issue. I had to go back to an earlier bios to get it to work. As soon as I did it popped up in Windows with no issues. Now to figure out what I will run.

I've done some reading and it looks like my mobo has a total of 20 pci-x lanes, the second x16 is really only x4 speed so should be fine.... it is just x16 compatible. Hopefully the original 16 lanes will be fine for the graphics card.

Anyone know if the Gigabyte P965-DS3P works with the RAID card?

Yeah its a file/application server. I had those two 1TB drives in RAID0, but I filled them up . Now my data is spread out between 4 different computers while I set this up...lol.

But yeah, I could do that kind of trade. Or I could take the identical 1TB green drive out of my HTPC and give it the 750GB one, and trade 3 of them for 2 blacks! Or I could just try adding in that drive into this array and make it 5TB in RAID5.....hrm....I'll try that out and see what happens.

Your second post seems to say you had an existing RAID-0 moved from a MoBo to your Perc. That is cool, and a bit encouraging. I am only concerned with being able to replace a Perc 5/i card on a RAID-5 array for a new card in case the card died on me. Do you know if that is possible?
Yes I did it today. I have a raid5 I will be moving to my HTPC. I took 4 drives out and put in 2 500GB running off my ICH9R. I have been working on my water cooling so I had to take everything apart. I only left the 3 SAS drives in the system. I then booted and it removed the Raid5 since it was there anymore. Once everything was running, I shut down the system plugged in the 4 drives and rebooted went into the PERC5/i Bios, under the first page I went to foreign and import and the PERC saw the raid 5. In windows all partitions and data was seen. I then copied the data over to the 500GB drives.

WOO! HOO!!
