Any AMD motherboard should work since the compatibility issue seems to be isolated to Intel chipsets. The compatibility is probably due to the fact that the card uses an Intel processor?

Oh, I also plan to give away my other Thermaltake Spirit HS for the RAM... if anyone is interested.

I never really have check temps besides the heat sink, how hot does the ram get on this thing?

Hey just a quick question, I'm about to purchase a Perc5i and I see you can use SAS and sata drives with it at the same time but do you need a different cable for the SAS or does it use the sata cable too?

The RAM actually stays cool. However, if you are running the card without good airflow... the entire card gets how including the RAM. The RAM HS helps in this case.

SAS drives are compatible with SFF-8482 plugs (aka SATA plugs).

Hey just found this thread - looks like a very promising device for RAID 5.

I'll be using it with an x48 board so presumably I'll need the mod, however I want to ensure that I will still be able to use the onboard RAID 0 for another array without having any problems. I've heard that other cards have this effect on some Intel chipsets.

Any thoughts?

Has anyone had any experience with perc 3/dc? It's a good bit cheaper, and I was wondering if the extra money would be worth it.

How many HDs will you be using?

The card supports up to 8 HDs and it supports multiple arrays.

The PERC 3/dc is a parallel Ultra3 SCSI card. You will need special and very expensive SCSI hard drives. Since it is older technology, the performance doesn't justify the cost.

The PERC 5/6 cards are Serial SCSI (SAS) which is plugin capable with SATA.

Anyone having problems putting their computer to sleep with the PERC 5/i installed? I'm having problems with it - I've 'ruled' out other pieces of hardware... the last thing for me to do is to install Vista on another hard drive and take out the PERC 5/i to see if it goes to sleep and wake up fine... but if anyone here has luck with putting your computer to sleep and waking it up with the PERC 5/i installed... please let me know.

Thanks.

That's the thing, I might either use ot for a single giant RAID 5 array with 8 640GB drives and used the onboard for a RAID 0 array, or I might use the card for two RAID 5 arrays of 4x640GB drives.

Actually, it would seem to make most sense to do that latter as I don't really need the space of the former.

Okay, so that's covered, but are there any issues getting Windows installed on an array on the card? I see you should update the firmware to the latest, can that be done with a floppy drive or something else that could use the DOS interface prior to installing Vista?

Lastly, does Vista have the correct drivers already packaged or would it be best to use a thumb drive with them?

By cutting pin 5 and 6 you are disabling the sm bus and isnt that related to power management?
