Well my card is hopefully on its way by now. Will this cooler be fine without the fan. It should be better than the standard cooler.

Try and see. If it feels like its too hot to touch, point a fan at it.

The CPU should only get super hot if you are doing RAID5 Writes.

OK thanks, I'll try the tape mod and let you know how it goes... (It will take at least 4 hours for me to get back and be able to try it though)

Also, how much memory are you running (system, not Perc), and what stick config (ie 2x 1gb, 4x 1gb etc)

I'm having some issues with my Perc 5i. After I create an array, I'm unable to see it in Disk Management. The drive just doesn't seem to show up. It was working fine on my machine a few months ago until I decided to re-create the array. I'm running XP-32 with the LSI 7.0.1-0051 firmware, 4 disk R5. I've also tried a 2 disk mirror which also didn't work. Any ideas?

OK, tried the pin mod on perc5 #1, no post on boot...
trying for perc5 #2 and perc6

Hi everyone, I'm a noob here, but I spent almost a full day reading most of the 100+ pages of this thread.

I am building a super workstation with the following:
- Mobo: Asus P6T WS Pro
- CPU: Core i7 920 Nehalem
- RAM: 6 Gb DDR3-1600Mhz
- DELL Perc5i
- 4x SAS Seagate Cheetah 15k.6 300 Gb in RAID 10, all connected to the Perc5i through 1 cable
- Vista Ultimate x64

The workstation will be used for general office work, Internet, email... but also for the occasional torrent downloading, PhotoShop work, back-ups... and once in a while for Premiere encoding.

I ran some read benchmarks and got the following results with different strip sizes and block sizes. Please note Adaptive-Read-Ahead and Write-Back were enabled for all:

HDTune benchmark block size 32k

RAID 10 strip size 32k

RAID 10 strip size 64k

HDTune benchmark block size 64k (default)

RAID 10 strip size 32k

RAID 10 strip size 64k

HDTune benchmark block size 128k

RAID 10 strip size 32k

RAID 10 strip size 64k

RAID 10 strip size 128k

Note that the results were so dreadful with this 128k strip size that it's unnecessary to show results with a benchmark of less than 128k block size.

Now to my conclusion: the reason I ran these tests was mainly to determine what is the best strip-size I should use. Unfortunately I couldn't run write tests as I don't want to go through the hassle of setting up a separate drive and having the RAID volume unpartitioned.

Anyhow... it seems the best strip size would be 32k.

And now to the questions:
1. Should I even try a strip size of 16k? Any idea if it's worth it?
2. My Perc5i is stock and I haven't flashed it with any update. It seems to be working fine with my Intel X58-chipset-built MoBo. Should I do the nail polish/tape trick? Or should I just leave it that way? It is sitting in a PCIe 16x slot.
3. Would flashing the card change the performance or make it really better? Is it worth it? (I'm a bit afraid of playing around with that)
4. Dumb question: should the 4 hard drives be connected to te Perc5i through 1 cable, or is it better to also use the other 32-pin connection on the Perc5i and connect 2x2 hard drives?
5. Any other recommendations?

Thanks! Looking forward to discussing...

1) Depend on your needs.... 32K to 128KB should be good for an OS.
2) If it working already, it should work. Only some X58 had issues....
3) Yes, it can improve performance.
4) Dunno.. probably doesn't matter?
Once again...

Indeed. I think trying 16k is not worth it... it's a too small strip size. 32k looked the best overall according to the test results, so I'll go with it. Especially with SAS 15k drives

OK I will monitor, hopefully the Perc5i works well with my X58 and I don't get any BOSD or anything like that. I will also try to flash the card after going through the detailed instructions.
