I didn't see where it says it doesn't support SATA, it just doesn't support SATA 1.5GB/s, which is the old standard for SATA.

The 6/i doesn't support SATA I only devices, so this drive will work, as it is SATA II.

Now for my own 6/i question:

Does this card have the same issues with Intel chipset motherboards that requires disabling the SM Bus contacts?

I've been looking for a 6/i card, since I really want to get raid6. Now I've found one, but I'm not sure if it's the real deal:

Dell WY335 PCIE SAS 6 I/R Controller Card
Dell Part N0 . WY335
ASSY,CRD,PERC6I-INT,SAS,SLED

Googling the part no gives some results that this might be a real perc 6/i card, but I couldn't yet find any specs straight from Dell with this part number. Does anyone have this card or have any knowledge of it?

I would ask the seller if it's a real PERC 6/i. To me, from quick Googling, it looks real.

Hi Guys,

First time posting, many time reading.

I really appreciate the technical knowledge I gain for setting up my Perc 5 from reading this thread.

I just got done building my NAS here are the specs:

CPU: E6300
RAM: 4GB
MB: Asus P5BV-M
NIC: Intel Pro/1000 PT
System Drive: 2 - 36GB Raptors (Software RAID 1)
RAID 5: 8 - Seagate 7200.11 1.5GB 32MB
Perc 5/i: 512MB LSI firmware 7.0.1-0066
(I have a APC 1500RS LCD to shut down nicely just in case of power issues)

I figure it will be used mostly as a Samba server for my PVR and iSCSI for my XenServer.

I figure my settings for RAID
7 in RAID 5 with 1 Hot Spare
Adaptive Read Ahead
Cached I/O
512KB Stripe

Also I was thinking of going LVM with xfs instead of using LVM with ext3.

Any recommendation?

As I understand it you can do Raid 50 with these drives. Does anybody have any benchmarks?

can you show us some photos ? this "R" could means that this is only RAID 1/0/0+1 - no RAID 5/6 ...

and there is NO PERC word in name ...

edit:

PERC 6/i

SAS 6/iR

OK so now that I have my rig all set up, I am looking into options to cool my Perc5i without modding the heatsinks.

My understanding is that it needs a good direct airflow, so I'm looking at the options of having a PCI-mounted fan. Obvioulsy, it should be the most silent possible.

Anyone has any experience using these below, notably the external Nexus? I'm thinking the fresh air coming from outside and blowing through the PCI slot opening below the Perc5i would be better than an internal fan blowing the internal air onto the Perc5i... Any opinions on this?

Any other fan recommendations, notably a more silent or better option?

Thanks!
