Dell definitely has released newer BIOSes since 3 years ago. I believe there was one last September.

People report that LSI yields better performance and use of their MegaRAID tool. However, a user reports a possible data corruption bug with very large arrays.

I'm going to ask a really stupid question. I installed MegaRAID storage manager and my Perc 5/i that arrived today has got the Dell firmware and MegaRAID works fine. Does it mean if I flash to a later Dell firmware that it is going to stop working? Or is it just that not all the functionality will be available?

Ok if you look at the back of a the sas drive and compare it with the back of the sata drive there is a piece of plastic between the power and data cable. I removed that piece. There were serveral small wires that I bent up which I believed were ground wires since the drive looked fine without them. I wouldn't suggest it because the data cables dont fit securely. I then put them is a sata drive holder which made it held them securely.

question: what are the requirements on the DIMM to upgrade the cache??? I had a stick of 512MB PC-3200 667Mhz ECC Registered single rank DIMM that was pulled from a Dell PowerEdge 1800 that I tried to use in the PERC 5/I, but when I installed it, the PERC 5/I wouldn't show up at all in the BIOS. When I put back the original 256MB it came with, everything works. I thought as long as I match the spec it would work... but I guess wrong.

So, what type of DIMM do i have to get to upgrade the cache? TIA for any hints..

so want another 146gb HP 15K SAS drive to RAID but cant afford it right now

I hope your drives aren't DualPort ... because you just removed/destroyed second port ... Wiring diagram

My friend gave them to me, they were upgrading, so I'm out nothing and they work fine in the Lian Li HX-33. Right now they are sitting in my Draw since I moved the PERC5i to my HTPC. I need to get a couple of 1TB drives for my HTPC and then I will move the PERC5/i to my File server. I may get another for my main PC but 3 WD 250AAKS single platter bench about the same as the server. I am a seagate Partner and they have a promotion for the new drives for 50% off but they limit the SATA to 1 and SAS to 6 drives. They have a 450 15 SAS drives for $199. I wouldn't mind getting 6 of them and put them in my file server.

I have bad news for you ... from AL-10LX (MBA) RC SAS DRIVE SERIES - PRODUCT MANUAL, page 14:

"CHAPTER 1 General Description
1.1 Standard Features
...
(4) Dual SAS port support
The HDDs have two pairs of driver and receiver set (PHY) for the SAS to support dual SAS port
connection.
On the HDDs, Primary and Secondary Ports on SAS plug connector (2 physical links plus power
connections) are used for SAS port connection."

Question:
Can you span an array across 2 Perc 5i cards?

I don't think so - I'm not aware of any true hardware raid cards that can span arrays across cards.
