PERC 5/i RAID Card: Tips and Benchmarks - Page 263

Ok i just had two major malfunctions with vista in one day. I am going to install win 7 x64. How much discussion has happened about win7 and the perc5/i? The Thread search blows :/

Look at my benchies on the front page with my 8x1TB raid 5
*EDIT*
oh duckie has never posted my 8x1TB only my 4x1TB
here is an 8x1TB

As far as I understand, I can add an extra drive of the same size in the future and the perc software can integrate it into the array without needing to backup data, deleting array, building the new one and restoring data right? Is that added space also usable in windows? In that, can I expand the partition of the array to include the space of I need to make another partition to use it?
Yes that what i did, started with 4 drives expanded to 8, you can expand the partition along with the raid.
However you increase your risk of breaking something and losing data.

I am unsure about this, Maybe you could replace one drive at a time and rebuild each time till all drives are the bigger ones then expande the array then the partition.
Anways it seems silly to do, just start over with a new array
Oh and if you didn't see the last one

Justus, thanks for the reply!
1) I am interested in the write performance not the read, so if you got any screenshot of a "write" hd tune...
2) I am interested in if I can expand by changing the drives and not adding drives, because if I start with 6x640 I got now then I only got room for 2x640=1280gb expansion in the future. If adding drives is the only way, then I shall exchange my drives first with 4x1tb essentially having the same space to being with (3tb) but this way I'll have the chance to expand up to 7gb like you...
But with 4 drives performance will probably be worse, and I dont really see myself expanding to 7tb like you....maybe I'll eventually get to 5tb max, so if I have the option to expand by changing the drives to bigger ones then I'll stay with what I got. But I want to know if I have the flexibility or not...

This is probably the best i have for reads

Hdtune needs an empty array to test reads which i didnt have becuase i went from 4 to 8 with my data intact.
I am really not sure on increasing drive size by doing one disk at a time. You might be on your own for this one.
Post your results thought

Still looking for some win7/perc info.

I is it possible to flash a perch 5/i Adapter (not integrated) with with LSI firmaware? Also once flashed is it possible to revert back to Dell's firmware in case of any issues with LSI's firmware?

Thanks in advance!!

Does anyone have any experience using more than one PERC in a system? could I make an array that spanned across both cards?

Edit: I'm pretty sure you can replace the drives one at a time, it just takes much longer because a full rebuild is required for each drive.

two PERC cards probably yes - but array spanned across cards - I don't think so ... you need to find SAS Expander - like this HP:

or cages/bays with expanders:

AXX4DRV3GEXP: Expander-based 4-drive bay that supports SAS/SATA drives. Requires two free SAS ports from the integrated SAS controller, ROMB Card or SAS RAID card. Only supported in SC5400 chassis family.

AXX6DRV3GEXP: Expander-based 6-drive bay that supports SAS/SATA drives. Requires two free SAS ports from the integrated SAS controller, ROMB Card or SAS RAID card.

Where's the best place to get a BBU for my PERC 6i? One that won't be dead when I get it.
