PERC 5/i RAID Card: Tips and Benchmarks - Page 267

does CPU come into play much because I have E1200 sitting here I could use in the server or would I better off buying a E2180 or E5200
post #2662 of 7150
The CPU doesn't really come into effect, as the PERC 6/i is a dedicated RAID card. Which means it has it's own CPU & dedicated RAM.

You'll probably get some CPU utilization, but with a RAID 1+0 setup, on an E1200, it didn't seem to matter much.

I have it overclocked to 2.66ghz.

okay.. cool so its so easy.. 6/i is a better card ?

Then i will buy some!

but you guys don't think that i you have 8 1TB drives RAID 6 is the way to go?...

i don't want to loose ~5TB data...
Yep 6/i is the better card.

I would go with RAID 5 for your drives. If you have a dedicated RAID card, Level 5 seems to be the best option to me. But you just need to weigh the pro's & con's of the different RAID levels to your desire.

here is a little bit better deal for you

1Tb Samsung EcoGreen F2 SATA-2 Hard Drive

but why you want to buy "eco green" drives for raid system ? they are slower than "normal" drives ...

Im thinking of buying PERC 6/i and go RAID 6.
Is the 6/i a better card?

And are my speeds normal or bad for my configuration?

There's something wrong with your set up.... You should be getting more performance and the chart should be downward sloping....
Once again...

ohhh

i showed all my configuration...what is wrong then?
why do you want the chart to be downward?

they will be storage drives for my media, I dont need extreme speed but data sercurity

With 8 drives together on 1 PERC you will bottleneck the controller before the drives. 8 'Eco' drives will perform almost identically to 8 Blacks or similar for home applications (servers, data storage, etc). If you are looking for higher workstation performance then a good SSD for your OS/Apps will give you much more of a boost than RAID ever will. For OS use a single current-gen 15K SAS disk or a V-Raptor (not RAIDed) will likely be faster than any RAID0 (even of the same drives) due to the access time overhead that RAID adds. Despite what sequential benchmarks will seemingly indicate, RAID is not good for OS use.

Buy your drives with price, warranty, reliability & power consumption in mind. Any set of 8 recent drives will saturate these controllers.

The e1200 should be perfect, although if you do replace it get an e5200 as it is faster but uses less power at idle.

As stated, you will get some processor usage, but in a networked server most of the cpu load will come from the network, not the storage contoller.
